He decided to go into a brand new upcoming field, and smartly picked a different route to the top.

Talking about brand new upcoming fields, is there a field for studying in minute detail the life choices of Tamil brahmins of the Iyer and Iyengar varietals, with particular emphasis on academic achievements and sexual proclivities? Sara Boji can be the first PhD in that field.

I knew a couple of guys who wanted to pursue dual Ph.Ds and one of them is making it. The two subjects are chalk and cheese in some ways but he is applying concepts learnt from one to a totally different field.
OTOH, please get off, Boji's back. Many of his topics have generated good debates and I have learnt a fair bit from them.

dunno what drove this guy to do that hence will reserve any comments. But looks like some people just love to be students all their lives. Know one such colleague who says if he had no money worries, he would spend his entire life in universities learning one thing or another.
another example is my neice. did engg. then PhD. Had two kids in a quick succession. Not sure if she ever worked a real job, but became a med student right after the second one. And is only 31!

when people choose research as a profession, getting a Ph.D is not a hindrance.
