People of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh celebrate the new year following the Satavahana (Andhra) calendar. The Stavahanas ruled a large area of India (except southern TN and most NI regions) after the decline of Mauryas and before the Guptas came into prominence. Their capital was Amaravati (near Guntur). The Satavahana cultural dominance is still seen in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Many festivals are common to the three regions.
