Sometimes "white" designation was used for Indians because there was no other "suitable" designation available. For example - I don't know how long you've been living in Maryland, but I've seen some Indians' late 60's and early 70's MD drivers licenses classified them as white.

Yes... in the 80s, even in school application white was defined as "people with ancestral origin in Europe, Northern Africa, middle east, and INDIAN SUBCONTINENT."

Then the Indian american lobby wanted separate classification hoping to garner "minority benefits". End up reclassfied as "asian" (yeah right...with slants and chinks), and ended up with no special previleges and even lesser advantages.

Indians are RACIALLY white, but ethnically different - just like the north africans or greek or italians.

She is right but as most are only superficially literate, she will come across as a liar (which she is in other matters). Even the SA used to consider Indians as racially white but ethnically inferior to "real whites"

uppili gets unduely excited at the prospect of being considered white. he thinks drivers license categorization allows him to join their fraternity and will be eligible to recieve a fat midwestern blonde as a welcome gift.

Before 85 or 86; Indians had no other place to mark except as White in any job/school applications... Not just DMV application.

Correction: it is a Korean chick that will work with me from next week. a vietnamese, Korean, and a blondie were trying to work with me - in the minor shuffle at work.

Yeah. An Indian friend of mine once told me he could not get 8A certification (minority company status) for a consulting company he tried to start around that time. Nowadays, there are lot of Indian-owned companies around the Washington Beltway.

Indians are considered minorities when it comes to opening businesses, but not in "JOBS", fellowships or school admissions. Even an OBC/SC-ST from India is a forward Asian in US.

I don't know about that. May be because 8A certification for 10 years is a great deal for getting govt contracts (set aside for minorities), even if the rules allow, actual getting of the certification may not be that easy.
