the great Indian philosopher Vachaspati Mishra (circa 9th century AD) was one of the greatest philosophers India has known. He is known to posterity as sarva tantra swatantra because he has written standard commentaries on every school of hindu philosophy. The peculiar feature of Vachaspati Mishra's writings is that he writes with total perspective i.e. when he writes on Vedanta, he writes as a Vedantin; when he writes on Nyaya, he writes as a Nyayayika and so on.

According to Vachaspati Mishra, since Charvaka materialists eschew good and evil and make no difference between virtue and vice and are rank hedonists, they should be considered more beastly than the beasts (pasunam api pasavah).
