...What can I say... there will be 28 IITs soon.

Soon the IITians will think twice before bringing up their "I am from IIT" in conversations. They better introduce themselves with their JEE rank.

My cousin is joining Univ of Ill - Chicago. He asked me if it is better than the "IIT" Chicago campus...

Yeah - Made in U.S.A (Ullahasnagar Sindhi Association), graduated from MIT (Madras Institute of Technology), my son is an IAS (actually IAAS, Indian Audit and Accounts Service) homophone of IAS, etc.

Yay! Why not 2800 IITs, so in 2020 every other SuCher can be an IITian.
