India's government is considering a rule change to allow cricket star Sachin Tendulkar to receive the country's highest civilian award -- for which sports stars are currently ineligible.
"A suggestion regarding modification in the existing eligibility norms has been received and is under consideration," junior home minister Mullappally Ramachandran told the upper house of parliament on Wednesday.

i don't see any reason why sports heroes should not be awarded BR when subbi, lats and pt joshi were. and even rajiv gandhi. zhat the zuck did that guy do?

What? Rajiv Gandhi got Bharat Ratna? Oh well, let's give to Sania Mirza too. Hamein dekhna hai ki mediocrity ko bhi bharat ratna ki upadhi mile. Garibi hatao.

PS: I think PVNR and MMS are more deserving of the Bharat Ratna than Rajiv Gandhi. MMS may yet get it, if unlike his political mentor he maintains his loyalty to 10 Janpath, and steps aside gallantly when Yuvraj is ready to take over his inheritance.

What is the big hurry to confer Bharat Ratna to Sachin? he is only 38. Why not wait till he retires? Are they trying to pull him into politics? If he is smart, he will stick to sports where he can make money honestly.
