....He said, “Patients treated with metformin had a small but statistically significant improvement in survival compared with the cohort of non-diabetics, whereas those treated with sulphonylureas had a consistently reduced survival compared with non-diabetic patients. This was true even without any clever statistical manipulation.” The professor also cautioned that this does not mean ‘patients with diabetes can get away scot free’; they will still lose about eight years of their life after contracting diabetes. He adds, “The best way to avoid the condition altogether is by keeping moderately lean and taking some regular light exercise.”

Their main medicine (Metformin) helps with anti-cancer properties (which is how most healthy oldies end up dying these days), but diabetics also lose 8 years off their mark right away once diagnosed.
