Maharashtra: Opportunistic BJP dumps 25 year old ally Shiv Sena

Modi is hoping he will be able to do to Shiv Sena what he did to former BJP ally Nitish Kumar in Bihar. Hopefully the BJP and Shiv Sena will cancel each other out in the elections.

On Karan Thapar's show, senior joirnalist Kumar Ketkar claims that the BJP does not have enough money to contest all seats in Maharashtra since it takes Rs 5 crore to contest a single Maharashra seat and have a shot at winning and BJP blew up most of its money on the Lok Sabha elections.

why is bjp taking this risk? are the polls showing bjp can win alone? is bjp becoming arrogant to ditch old partners?
looks like congress and ncp also parted ways. i can understand that. they know they have a severe beating awaiting them. both of them want to give a try to build party for future.
bjp always screwed up maharastra .

BJP wants chief ministership of Maharashtra. The reason they decided to dump Shiv Sena--after Sena refused to part with the CM post--is because first they already have in place a pre poll alliance with four small Maharashtra based parties with a few pockets of influence and secondly and more importantly they probably have in place a back door deal with both the NCP and Raj Thackeray's MNS.

NCP is so discredited that they will gladly accept the crumbs thrown at it by BJP. When there was water shortage in Maharashtra NCP leader Ajit Pawar had said that is he expected to piss in a reservoir/dam to ensure better water supply? People were very hurt by this statement.

As for Raj Thackeray he is said to have a better rapport with BJP leaders than Uddhav. Raj had agreed not to put up any candidate against the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections presumably in return for some favor later on.

i remember reading about ajit pawar's comment.
with so many seeking to contest, it will be a mess. but electorate will reduce he contest to two parties by region .
old alliances may still kick in the form of local adjustments. just a guess.

There was a survey just before the by-polls which gave BJP some 135 seats and 112 seats (with and w/o Shiv Sena). The same poll gave Shiv Sena 120 seats and 58 seats (with and w/o BJP). This was assuming a Cong-NCP alliance.

There are no known local leaders at this point. Munde, Mahajan, Thackerey all gone. Dont be surprised if BJP ties up with the other 4 smaller parties and MNS. This team will be formidable - with Shiv Sena, NCP, and Cong (i) fighting individually.

Practically speaking Modi is a Maharashtrian and speaks excellent Marathi - better than Bal Thackerey even in the 90s.

yes. if the results throw up a hung assembly which is a possibility. other than a congress and bjp alliance, every thing else is possible.

yes. if the results throw up a hung assembly which is a possibility. other than a congress and bjp alliance, every thing else is possible.

Congress cannot go with Shiv Sena or Raj Thackeray or BJP. It is the NCP which can go with any party thus placing it in a very advantageous position if there is a hung assembly.
