That entire paragraph nails it:

And then we have the three-million strong NRI and PIO community. I have yet to meet a more smug, selfserving, patronising, opinionated lot. Ideologically, they are a little to the Right of Yogi Adityanath. Till a decade ago, these superior folk could not stand India: it was dirty, corrupt, lazy, poor and inefficient. Third-rate, in other words. Today, they queue up to buy luxury apartments in gated colonies in Gurgaon saying they always wanted to return home.

The first generation of NRIs — Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley and Preet Bharara — pretend their parents' birthplace does not exist. They may have Indian wives, Indian names, kids who look desi, but India for them could be Mars. Why? Because acknowledging their 'roots' would harm their political careers.
.....
This community exercises enormous pressure on any government in power to tow the American line so that the US becomes our pre-eminent partner, especially in business and strategic matters. These gents are a menace.

Vinod Mehta needs a better proofreader. It is toe the line. Not tow the line.

And it is not first generation of NRIs, but second generation Indian-Americans.

C'mon, it's too much to expect EcoTimes' sub-editors to do the job they are paid to.

Wah!   These NRIs and PIO community even thought only until a few months ago that India was secular in spite of all its religious laws, and thay even had the U.S. Govt. brain-washed into believing that Modi was a threat to India's secularism and had him visa denied by the U.S. Govt.

Our infatuation with Unkil Sam Empty Re: Our infatuation with Unkil Sam

To be fair, to the children of Indian parents ("ALL American"- 1st generation) born and raised in smaller towns in the USA like Jindal and Haley, 30-40 years ago, the world they grew up, esp. Southern States like South Carolina and Lousiana was very different. They must have had hardly had any peers, similar to them..and the influences shaped them were mostly White/Black..and may be a few Asian/Hispanic peers. So, naturally their mindset and loyalites are to the USA first.
*And naturally, the locals (!) see them that way, and vote of them so much more easily..hard to find Governors like them elsewhere..even in blue states.

Bharara, was MII (Made in India) like me..but, from what I know..was raised-went to primary-high school here..so he is in another category..perhaps we are more conflicted in our loyalties (him more than me..because I only spent my summers here..and it also depends on the families and ultimately the individual).

*Things have dramatically changed in the South..now in any public school..with magnet and honors programs..the classes are majority Asian- they have an abundance of peer friendships with a lot more Indian cultural exposure and experiences..every time I attend a youth cultural program..it's all Bollywood dancing! They are more affluent..travel to India often..have the best of all worlds- the whole world:)

*The "USA shine" is greatly diminished..no way is it as glamorous to Indians (in India) even 5-10 years ago..for obvious reasons.

I read the paragraph that set the loins of kebab munchers atwitter. sounds like a typical sour grapes whiner still grinding axes over khobragade affair. he received one letter from some fool (why would some random NRI send him a 100 dollars and give him instructions on how to spend it...that doesnt sound made up, hell no it doesnt) and feels like he knows what all NRIs are like. what a douche.

There's no need to take this personally. If you don't like what you see in the mirror, stop looking. What's the point of calling the mirror names and doubting its intentions?

LOL! Let Vinod Mehta (and TOI publications) learn to be accurate mirrors of resident Indians first. I remember Vinod Mehta on Times Now the day before the election results were declared in India, when they were discussing the opinion poll results which showed that BJP's tally would be in the early 200s. He pointed to the sky and declared dramatically that it is proof that someone up there is watching out for India because BJP / Narendra Modi were not getting a majority on their own! rofl Mirror, my ass!

All that this article did was pass around a little burnol to people like Confused Douche and Merlot Aunty who are still butthurt about Modi being the PM of India with absolutely majority and visiting the US within a few months of that, despite all their past efforts and prayers to have his visa to the US canceled. Important Note: Don't use up all the burnol yet! NRIs have organized great events for Modi, which they will attend in large numbers and make Modi's visit a great success. NRI's attendance at Modi's public event will be limited only by the seating capacity of the venue. In addition, Modi himself will have a great visit meeting with political and business leaders from the US and other countries. So, you will be needing some of that burnol for the next few days. Save some of it.

Doesn't Vinod Mehta sound like a certain old man who gets worked up about young Indian techies who come to the US and make more money in a decade than he made in his entire lifetime, and horror of horrors, these young Indian techies don't even know English correctly, na? What gives them the right to be so economically successful, and throw their money and influence around in the US and in India?

Unfortunately for Vinod Mehta, things are only gonna get worse with the NRI community - their influence and clout in the business and political sectors in both US and India is only going to increase further. Forget about Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley and Preet Bharara. In a few short years, there are going to be second generation Indian American kids taking up prominent business and political leadership positions in the US, and many of these kids are going to have their Hindu identities and values intact. Now, that would be truly horrifying for the likes of Vinod Mehta.
