Every living thing in the world is selfish. They die otherwise. The only thing that surprises me is people who go all against the word selfish. The only thing bad about selfishness is when you hurt others deliberately for undeserved gains.

How do you plan to understand others unless they are willing to express themselves? How do they express themselves without the very "I" you want them to avoid.

That's what these artists do. They pick up from their own experiences or experiences of others and express this via a strong medium. It helps the affected people know that they are not alone. Help others see how their actions affect others’ lives.

When I saw this song, the part of the little girl who is taking on a bully, but getting punished herself in return, it connected to me. Because I know a girl like that. Of course, it's easier for me to empathize with her because she is in my family, so I get to hear her side all the time.

Let me give a recent example. The girl was in a class she thoroughly enjoys, and respects the teacher. In one class, she was having a discussion with the teacher on a topic. She realized she was going in the wrong direction, and that it would take forever to explain herself. So she withdrew from that discussion.

Then she went out on recess and found out that a girl who had been bullying her for years (physical and verbal threats, stare down in gym lockers while she changed, and social media putdowns), had clicked an unflattering picture of hers, and distributed it to everyone she knew. The girl was upset, and when she got back to the same class, she wasn't as chatty as before. She kept to herself.

Then she gets home, and her mother is waiting to talk to her. The teacher had misread her quietness as sulkiness towards him and the course. He went to the school, and they called the mother complaining about it, and telling her to take the girl out of that class, as he thought she was not to the level of the class, can’t explain herself and gets overwhelmed over small discussions.

Now imagine this girl. Being humiliated publicly, and being kicked out of the class she loves by the very teacher she looks up to. The mom saw red, and corrected the bully overnight. How? That story for another time. Smile

Every living thing in this world is NOT selfish.

Humans are. Is a lion or deer or that Peepal Tree Selfish?

Selfishness is a result of a "thinking" mind.

Hence limited to homo sapiens, and NOT to the Nature or living things in Animal/Plant kingdom.

Now, coming to humans - It is still NOT universal. Many have devoted, dedicated, and given up their lives for selfless reasons including millions of human soldiers for their respective country.

So, please - We are NOT in some SURVIVAL mode.

We think, choose, and decide, in a free world. [Limited to folks in US and India, I aint talking of women's rights in Syria]

Equipped with mind and intelligence, living in a free country - I shall not agree with a statement - that Every living thing is selfish.

Only the folks who are trying to "survive" rather than "live" are in selfish mode.

People dont die otherwise. People do choose to die otherwise. Think of any soldier or a Mahatma Gandhi.

Life is not about to survive.

Now that we have graduated from such folks who are merely looking to survive to others -

I have absolutely no idea what you talked about the girl. Bully. School. And where it came from.

But Kudos to the mother of this girl. The mom stood up. To fight against the wrong.I am sure the daughter of such a mother will end up stronger to fight this evil evil world.

The idea of "I" is not about seeing rest of the world as "You".

The idea of "I" is about seeing rest of the world as their own "I".

Its not a fight, a struggle, to survive my "I" vs. world.

Its about understanding that the 6+ billion "I" exist on planet earth.

Trying to survive, fight, selfless, selfish, struggle - zillion ways.

The fundamental gist that I had against the lyrics of the song you posted was - It is too "I" centric.

And no, the singer does not live in Syria.

Hence, BS.

TS this is an inspirational song meant for people, especially teenagers, dealing with various issues in life (as shown in the video). This song is saying 'I went through it too, and I came out of it, so can you. There is hope and I support you (don't you ever feel you are less than perfect, you are perfect to me)'. In the video they show the girl to be a successful artist now. It is also to raise awareness among others about these issues and view people with a bit more empathy.

Funny how you got stuck on the unspoken word "I" in the song. Seems to me like you are sorting out something else in your own mind and don't want to understand this song itself, so I will leave you with that.
