How many of you were affected? Lost Power? Major parts of CT state lost power for more than a week. One of the most advanced part of world is brought to a stand still by trees falling on power lines. These power lines were built long time ago and state does not resources to bury the power lines underground now. It is a sad but interesting dynamic of earlier technologies clashing with today's monetary troubles.

That is still in the realm of superman comics and research labs.

CT would probably dream of some Tax to siphon of money wirelessly.

Irene in August shut off power to half the state and this snow storm shut it off for 3/4th of state. In each case power was lost for more than a week. think of all the productivity lost. Thats a shame.

I don't know of fuel cell solution but generator solutions range from 4K to 6K.

I heard it's not too far off. they've proven the concept at short distances - like within a medium sized room.

Connecticut is a beautiful state with lots of trees which is why an ice storm causes so much damage

the state could destory the beauty by choppng down the trees but I think that is terrible

Anyways ice storms occur but every few years

If the power cables are buried underground the growing roots will bend and distort them

Wireless whenever it comes would be good but too expensive

A generator cannot light up the whole house just a few select rooms

poor peope cannot afford it

i am not sure what we are talking about here. the duke university solution is for low power electronics -- hand helds, sensors and so on. power supplies to a typical american single family residence are in the range of 3-5 kW.

i am also not sure of what 4k to 6k means? $ 4k to 6k for a generator to power a home? assuming that's what tbt meant, and assuming conservatively that he means a 5 kW supply system, that is $800 $1200/kW which is much too expensive. anything greater than $400/kW is unlikely to find success in the mass residential market.

we have buried power lines. so didn't get affected, but had to deal with tree damage etc.

power went off for 4-5 hours, basement flooded a bit as a result, which reasulted in mold.

My housing development buried cables but rest of the vicinity is above ground wires and thick forested tree area. At a slight hint of unusual weather, power could be in question.

Generator 5000/8000/14000/17000 KW generators were discussed in that range. CT has regulations which require one to install a panel by a certified regulator. These are the quotes from couple of those certified professionals. Good installation will prevent backflow into power lines and resulting dangers.

My industrial experience tells me that even a small electronic power transmission through wireless is still on research table. Experiemental options studied but discarded because of liability problems including overheating. Elegant commercial solutions were not available at least as late as 2009.

Residential power wireless transmission is probably few decades away.

Cutting trees is part of civilization. We need to have a balance between trees and our needs. Almost all appliances need electricity and we are a appliance driven civilization. Power is a necessity. So we need to ensure flow of power. Burying wires is a good practical solution and is very successful in most states. UK has buried almost all of its transmission lines. So should USA. Of course it will have some negative impacts including few dollars of your/my pocket.
