he needs 33 runs at the start of today's play. Quality of bowling and docile pitch make this century if he gets it, a somewhat lesser acheivement. He failed to deliver in England in more challenging circumstances. If he scores a century, he should follow it up with some solid centuries in Australia to show that he did not lose his batting abilities against top notch bowling attacks.

However, this is still a feat because this is sachin's 22nd year and his performance in 24 months puts among the top ten batsmen in test cricket. maintaining such high level of technical ability over such a long time is a tremendrous feat. That is like Micheal Jordan in basketball or joe Montana(is it tom brady nowadays?) in football.

I am planning towatch for a while. Hopefully he will help India avoid a follow on.

Would Brett Favre be a good comparison? Both won once at the biggest stage...the longevity of their careers...

I'm gonna pop in between work to watch it too...

Brett Favre would be a good comparison in terms of longitivity. However the knock on Brett is that he is a run and gun QB and threw too many interceptions. My personal opinion is that Brett is fun to watch and I enjoyed watching him.

Sachin is more systamatic and predictable. he is also very steady and softspoken. That reminded me of Joe Montana.

Sachin gone at 94. Hung out his bat. Wi planned for that. No thirdman. Outside rising ball. Now the wait goes onto Australia. Cummings and company will be waiting for him.

India still needs 68 with last recognized batting pair in. Self inflicted wounds.

tuned in with great anticipation and got really excited with the majestic straight drive and the upper cut for six. major let down when he got out. then went to sleep. good for ashwin he got a ton. he used to open for india u-19 team. so that he scored a century is not a surprise. hope this seals his spot for the oz tour.

btw he is the third indian and the 27th overall to get a 5-fer and a ton in the same innings. who are the other two? i had to look it up. one was a name i expected to see. the other i didn't expect.

you have to go way further back than the names you've mentioned and think of one of india's great allrounders (not named kapil dev that is).

Max,

Polly Umrigar.

I was checking score for a while late into night and was really pleasently surprised to watch Aswin scoring at a faster clip than Kohli. Aswin needs to go Australia for his bowling. His batting is a bonus and his performance may close the door for Harbhajan's Australian hopes. Ojha could be the other spinner.

India may need to take five 'Fast' bowlers to include the two rookies and Praveen.

I think when a bowler when he comes in to bat always bats more freely as he doesn't have as much pressure that a batsman has...and vice-versa, right?

Ashwin did look fluent and kinda let his cricket do the talking after being rebuked for expressing dissent about the Wankhede pitch...should be a good 4th day ahead...

i agree. bhajji hasn't been setting domestic cricket on fire either. time for him to buckle down and get his basics right before being considered again. long ago when he had similar problems, he worked with fred titmus who passed away earlier this year. maybe he can seek help from some other oldie like john emburey or our own prasanna or venkat but i think he is too proud for that.

Speaking of Venkat, Ashwin could follow in his foot steps. Though Aswin looks like a better batsman than Venkat ( who also had a test century in later of part of his career if I remeber correctly), it would be great help if he can reach Venkat's levels in bowling and fielding (Venkat was second best after Eknath solkar in the famous close up fielding cordon that also includes Abid Ali, Farokh Engineer and Wadekar at slip).

Ashwin's rise makes Indian bowling with the expected return of Zaheer back to fold , Test level B class unit.

I read that Ashwin was an OPENER for the U-19 India team.

Well... that has to count for something towards has battting.
