BJP wants Akbar Road to be renamed Maharana Pratap Road; BJP spokeswoman compares Akbar to Hitler

Mughal ruler Akbar may end up following in the footsteps of his great-grandson Aurangzeb — at least when it comes losing roads named after them.
The BJP on Wednesday made it clear that it supported party leaders who have recently demanded that Akbar Road be renamed Maharana Pratap Road. Former Army chief and Minister of State for External Affairs General V.K. Singh wrote to Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu earlier this week asking for the road to be renamed in honour “this great son of India”.
On Wednesday, BJP' official spokesperson Shaina N.C. came out in support of the change.
“#AkbarRoad should be renamed to Maharana #Pratap Marg. Imagine #Hitler Road in #Israel! No country honours its oppressors like we do!!” she tweeted.
Earlier this month, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had told the news agency ANI that there were “disproportionate number of roads named after Muslim conquerors”, about “33 per cent of roads in Lutyens’ Delhi”. He added that he supported the renaming of Akbar Road.
Last year, the New Delhi Municipal Council changed the name of the colonial-era Aurangzeb Road in Lutyens’ Delhi to Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Road, in honour of the former President who passed away in July 2015. This was after several proposals and demands from right-wing Hindu groups that had wanted to remove the name of the Mughal emperor.
The NDMC, so far, says it is not planning on renaming Akbar Road.
“We have not received any proposals so far,” confirmed a senior NDMC official.
The civic body had received a lot of flak for renaming Aurangzeb Road, with the result it abandoned plans to rename Aurangzeb Lane.
