As the world prepares for yet another climate summit, the prospects of any substantive deal are remote at best. With every one of these summits, the scientific evidence gets stronger that the planet is on course for big changes in temperature, but humanity as a whole is not in a position to tackle the issue. Europe, which took the lead for the stillborn Kyoto Protocol alongside Canada and Japan, is in a whole different place thanks to its economic mess. And now there is news that Canada is looking to pull out from an extension of the caps under Kyoto.
