He probably feels cursed. Also, there have been accusations that since he moved to Spain very early in life, he doesn't feel much loyalty to Argentina and therefore doesn't play to his full potential when playing for them. I think years of disappointment, frustration and criticism have made him throw in the towel.

Don't also forget Maradona's statements about him and Maradona has a huge following, soccer-wise, in Argentina.
