a brief exchange about the recent farming situation (protests) in India
"Please look the system in the country where you have taken shelter. How are they supporting their farmers. Since you are Agri Engr, hence you must be knowing how USA and European nation are giving support to farmers so that citizens of those countries can get food at reasonable cost . Even during Corona all countries have provided financial helps to their citizens to overcome this difficult time." from a FB friend
My response:
There are no restrictions or laws to farmers by the Govts. in Canada and USA on the sale of grain / produce. Farmers can sell their produce, even encouraged by the Govt., to whoever wants to buy it (whether ordinary people, businesses, restaurants, corporations, other farmers, and so on).
Moreover, the Govt. in Canada or USA, unlike in India, does not bail out a farmer by forgiving bank loan etc. when he runs into a loss and even if he threatens suicide or hunger strike. The Govt. in USA or Canada is not interested in keeping the losing farmers in business by spending good money on subsidies.
In addition, the Govts. in Canada and USA don't have the reservations and quotas in education and jobs for sons and daughters of farmers, unlike in India where such quotas (about 25%) exist to farmers as OBC.
