The Islamist extremists who took control of northern Mali are on a wanton spree of destruction. They are demolishing the heritage of their own people -- tombs of respected Sufi saints from Timbuktu's heyday as a major trading power. What these Islamists are destroying is not just the heritage of the people of Timbuktu, but the heritage of humanity in general. Some of the buildings they are demolishing are designated by UNESCO as part of world heritage. This is the worst case of completely pointless destruction of valuable heritage since the Taliban's destruction of Buddha statues in Bamiyan.
