Silk Smitha wrote:10. The Himalayas were formed as a result of a collision between which two supercontinents/plates?

Indo-Australian & Eurasian.
absolutely correct. i was seeking the names of the supercontinents too (you named only one) but your answer is right. more about gondwana later.
Merlot Daruwala wrote:
10. Asian plate and Indian subcontinent?
no. even if i reasonably take "asian" to suggest "eurasia," it still leaves out the fact that the "indian" plate is always mentioned as the "indo-australian" plate because after the "indian" plate separated from the supercontinent gondwana at (now) madagascar, it fused with the adjacent "australian" plate before making a journey northwards to the himalayas. the "indian" plate, as per "web wisdom" (copyright artood2), is still fused with the australian plate (and so is the landmass and ocean floor between the two). the reason for the faster movement of the breakaway "indian" plate northwards, again attributable to "web wisdom" (copyright artood2), is because it was less "thick" than than the rest of gondwana and indo-australia (does not mean there was fluid underneath it but it was still more fluid than the surrounding mass).

panini press wrote:
10. Indian and Eurasian plates
half-correct.

the correct answer is the indo-australian plate (part of the supercontinent gondwana) and the eurasian plate (or supercontinent eurasia). the himalayas are still growing in height, albiet at a slower pace.

gondwana supercontinent included africa, indian subcontinent, australia, antartica and south america. they separated and some moved north. here is an image of gondwana with the shape of the emerging continents shown:

Wednesday Trivia #32: Jul 18, 2012 519px-Laurasia-Gondwana.svg

what now follows is purely my speculation: while the term gondwana is used mainly to distinguish living organisms (that were extant on this landmass), i feel it not a coincidence that australia, india, africa and south america, all have abundant resources of superior iron ore (superior than the US, ukrainian or chinese variety). africa has huge uptapped reserves of high fe iron ore but it has been mined in an organized way only in south africa. the existing iron ore resources of the world would deplete in a couple of decades and unless a substitute for steel is invented, africa would be the next great provider of iron ore. further, a technology for converting coal to oil, the fischer-tropsch process, was successfully industrialized in south africa (which is an oil deficient state). this technology was industrialized by a south african company called sasol. the technology had few takers because of fluctuations in the price of oil (oil was mostly cheap then). there was another reason why this technology had few takers: south african coal, on which the sasol technology is based, was not found anywhere else in the world except in india. with oil becoming dearer, there has been a renewed interest in this technology by indians and last i read was that either reliance or essar had inked a pact with them. i do not know what came out of it.

now might be a good time to pimp something i had written, long ago, about gondwana and eurasia: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Nepal#History (just the history section and some images)

i will comment on the rest of the questions after indophile and kris deal with them.

[/quote]

"Sunabeda" (the town where the HAL factory is located) means "gold field" in Oriya. There is a small mountain stream next to the town. During the old days (my grandfather or great-grandfather's time) people used to sift sand from that stream to find gold. It is said that even today, if you are patient enough, you might get lucky:Laughing Sunabeda is 3500 feet above sea level. You need to descend a 1000 ft in about 20 miles to get to my hometown at 2500 feet above sea level.
