I visited old CH today after many days, and felt saddened by what was going on. I don't know if anyone will change their mind because of what I posted, but I felt I owed it to CH to post the message below.

believe it is Sulekha's duty to fix the bug correctly and prevent that

In order to preserve the community of CHers from dispersing out of sheer
frustration, I have created a new forum. We have almost 100 users
signed up on the new forum; over 50 are participating users who have
posted there in the last three weeks. The new forum has a number of
excellent features that this site hasn't had for years: (a) you can post
rich information like links, images, videos, music, emoticons, etc.;
(b) you can post in Indian language scripts; (c) you can set the system
to help you ignore stalkers / abusers; (d) it is not plagued with ads
like Sulekha CH is; and (e) it does not have any spam messages so far
(and even if it does, you can easily set spam blocking).

The new site also has a drawback: the administrator -- which in this
case is me -- can see the IP address that any post was made from. I
understand why this can be a concern for many of you. In order to
mitigate this concern, I have resolved to use the Admin account
sparingly indeed, and you can always see when the Admin account was last
used. In addition, I have made a commitment to never disclose any
information I obtain by virtue of my being an administrator to anyone. I
appreciate the trust that over 50 CHers have already shown in me, and I
will do everything I possibly can to avoid squandering that trust.

I understand that some of you are opposed to moving to the new forum,
and I want to address the concerns that I sense are holding you back
from trying the new forum.

ISSUE 1: LOYALTY. My loyalty as a long-time CHer is to the _PEOPLE_ of
CH more than it is to the _TECHNICAL PLATFORM_ of CH. It is the people
that made CH what it is; not the crappy technical platform that Sulekha
never really maintained well. Now that most of the users have indeed
migrated, please consider whether that community has a greater claim to
your loyalty, or this crumbling infrastructure.

ISSUE 2: CONVENIENCE. The new forum will take a day or two to get used
to. Your time, as mine, is limited. I certainly don't want to waste it
on deciphering HTML source code, making sense of garbled text, or
posting a new thread for each comment. There is no need for doing that
when you can have a free-wheeling conversation on the other forum
without worrying about someone killing the conversation right in the
middle. The ability to copy-paste from other web sources without
worrying about posting errors is another big plus.

ISSUE 3: ABANDONMENT. _TRYING THE NEW FORUM_ does not mean _ABANDONING_
Sulekha for good. I am personally open to moving back here for good, if
Sulekha fixes the bugs that bother me most. I have listed those bugs in
my last post here. I certainly see some advantages to Sulekha (including
an easy way for the occasional CHer to locate the community.) If you
truly believe Sulekha is going to fix the infrastructure, then we could
all move back here when that happens; if against your belief, Sulekha
does not fix it, then we have a platform that is more conducive to your
discussions.

ISSUE 4: PRIVACY. You can sign up to the new forum _WITHOUT_ a valid email address, by using http://www.10minutemail.com.
As far as IP addresses are concerned, the most I will know is which
city you are logging in from; in most cases, I will not even know that,
thanks to something called DHCP. Regardless, _I COMMIT TO NEVER LOOKING
UP ANY IP ADDRESS_; so all I will ever know is a string of four numbers
that has no further meaning to anyone. Like I said elsewhere, _I WILL
NEVER DISCLOSE ANY INFORMATION_ I have access to as admin, unless
compelled by law to do so.

ISSUE 5: IDENTIFY OF ADMINSTRATOR. Some of you have concerns about _ME_
being the administrator. I can understand that. I have said on the new
forum and I will say it here -- I will not login as Admin unless
absolutely necessary. In the three weeks the forum has been around, I
have never moderated any discussion, and I don't intend to act as
moderator. I am an argumentative person and I have strong opinions that I
don't hesitate to express, and I have had arguments with many people
who haven't tried the new forum. But I will never let my differences of
opinion with you influence my role as admin or vice versa.

In order to address this concern permanently, I have proposed to the
people at the new forum that I turn over the administration of the new
forum to Sulekha. This is an idea I am still open to, as long as we can
protect the integrity of the technical infrastructure. Here is that

It is, of course, quite possible that you actually hated all the people
who left, and would rather have a forum with just the participants that
you have left here. To the handful of people who feel that way: I wish
you much enjoyment on this forum. To most of the rest here who don't
feel that way: there is no real harm in trying out the new forum. It
does not amount to abandoning Sulekha not being disloyal to CH. It is no
more inconvenient than the inconvenience you have been putting up with
here for a month now. (Yes, it a month since the thread-killing started,
and Sulekha has not even acknowledged here that they have a problem.
Perhaps they don't see the status quo as a problem.) Go ahead and try
out the new forum; people there miss you, and -- admit it to yourself --
you miss them too! All that will happen is that people will welcome
you, and all of the usual fights and exchanges of CH will go on in the
new forum.

I may have missed some of the other concerns you have. If you have other
concerns about the new forum, please post them here (or in the new
forum.) I will check here again tomorrow.

You may be wondering why I am posting this at this time. I wanted to
wait a couple of weeks for the dust to settle before asking you again to
move. I wanted to see if the new forum can stand the test of time. In
that time, I refrained from logging in as admin for a full week. When I
logged in as admin again, it was enable more features. In the meanwhile,
I see more and more of the us vs. them behavior between the two forums.
My intent in creating the new forum was not to fracture the community,
but to provide a better experience for the whole community. It is time
for us to set aside this us vs. them partition / divorce mentality. We
don't need to agree on everything (I hope we DON'T ever agree on
everything!) but I do hope we can agree that being on one usable forum
is better than being split across two.

Anyway, it all boils down to trust - a few won't come here because of their history with you and their ego will simply not permit it (yes, they will still read this forum).

Some others, I think, simply like drama and this is just another opportunity for them to put on a performance.

That is correct. It takes a couple of conscious steps before I can see any IP address:
1. Login as Admin. (If I do, you guys will know that I have logged in as Admin. My intent to stay off that ID for as long as I possibly can.)
2. Click on the show IP button. This will show me the four-number IP address of the poster.

Alternatively, I can go to the Admin control panel, and I will see the IP addresses of logged in users (those who haven't hidden themselves -- those who hid themselves in their user settings will show as Anonymous.)

Those four numbers by themselves are useless. In order to infer anything from them, I would need to do an IP address lookup.

Sir, as a well-wishing alter-ego, it's my duty to warn you that you're sounding like a wannabe pol. Objectively speaking, the "partition" consists of 6 individuals who preferred to stay back and converse with each other in fragments. There's hardly anything rational in a decision to stick to a crappy platform. So where is the sense in writing a 1000-word essay that methodically addresses the various concerns that a rational abstainer from this forum might have?

PS: I feel bad about the "partition" too. But only because I miss the sheer entertainment that atleast 3 of the 6 individuals provided. But that deprivation is good too - I'm finally growing up.

You are talking about a generic sweeto, a common noun form of that word. HK is talking about the proper noun usage of that term. I presume that there once was a handle named sweeto. I could be wrong. Uff.

There was no begging, God forbid!
It was to just let them know that they are welcome here. Afterall, there are still many decent people there.
