Call it a generational shift or the compulsion of changing times, more students whose mother tongue is Tamil are now learning Hindi as their second language in schools in Coimbatore.

School teachers too feel that learning Hindi in addition to one’s mother tongue gives students an edge when it comes to relocating outside Tamil Nadu in later years.

Some parents like Tamilselvan Nachimuthu, a bank employee, are enrolling their children in private Hindi tuition centres. “If my daughter learns to speak Hindi, she would not have to be tongue-tied when I am transferred to a north Indian State,” says Nachimuthu whose father was a staunch supporter of the anti-Hindi movement.

“In our school we provide Hindi and Tamil as additional languages for students who do not have these languages as their mother tongue. Even though this was optional, we find that most Tamil students now opt to learn Hindi,” says a principal of a leading school in R S Puram. “We start teaching them alphabets from class III and slowly move on to grammar as the language is not spoken in their homes,” he adds. Teachers also give imposition to students in Hindi so that they pick up the language fast.

“Learning Hindi or any other language is a matter of choice and no one can be forced to learn or shun a language. Today, with students reaching out and making their mark at the national and international arenas, it is an important advantage to know the language.

However, if they willingly choose to turn away from it, that choice should also be respected,” says K Sathyanarayanan, principal of Mani Higher Secondary School.

Teachers also say that some parents are forcing their children to study Hindi as they feel it would help them be at home when they go for higher education in other States.

“We do have some students who are reluctant learners of the language. But we have also seen cases where a reluctant learner grasps the language fast and begins to hum Hindi melodies,” says a Hindi teacher of a school in Vada Kovai.

Interestingly, in a reverse trend, some Hindi-speaking students have started learning Tamil in schools. Champa, a class VI student of a school in R S Puram, who hails from Delhi, says she can read Tamil name boards.

“I took up to learning Tamil as an additional language from class III. Initially it was difficult, as we do not speak Tamil at home. But our teachers are patient and I am gradually picking up Tamil. Now I actually like it, when I learn new Tamil words,” she says.

You still don't get it...do you ?

These kids are learning Hindi VOLUNTARILY and not forcebily. Of course, you Naarthies never believe in such a concept. Please show me 3 examples from the Rape Pradesh, where students VOLUNTARILY study Tamil or other Southie languages.

I have always maintained that i am not for compulsion. Let children learn hindi if they want to and let no force be applied in this respect.

this is what comes of half-baked knowledge from the googles and internets. DTEA is a central board high school system that is attended almost exclusively southern indian families, in fact mostly tamil families in delhi. the name has nothing to do with tamil but everything to do with who attends these schools and who runs these schools. my cousins all attended these schools. they were somewhat lower cost alternatives to the DPS and modern schools while providing a high quality education. additionally, the girls could avoid the kind of harassment one reads about in the papers routinely these days.

You showed Coimbatore...and not Madras...

So you show NOT Delhi, but some second tier city in Rape Pradesh where HINDI kids learn Tamil Voluntarily.

it's probably taught, but tamilians learning tamil is no big deal. what is a big deal is tamilians not learning tamil. dog bites man -- not news, man bites dog -- news.

are ALL students in these schools tamils (or even south indians)? Probably not. There must be many north indians enrolled in these schools as well. it would be politically incorrect to have schools in delhi where all the students are tamils (or even all south indians).

Pure conjecture. At what point are you planning to convert this into an unassailable FACT?

Any google references behind your "Perhaps...and MUST be..?"

Thanks for agreeing that OVERALL, the naarthies will not learn Tamil on their own - unless needed.

All your post after post is nothing but forcing Hindi on Tamilians - a charge KV (and Max and I) make.

it can be investigated whether these tamil schools in delhi have preferential quota for south indians, particularly tamils, in their admissions.

I am simply pointing out that a paradigm shift has taken place in TN and more and more Tamil students are telling the anti-hindi fanatics to get out of the way because they wish to learn Hindi.

rashmun, these schools are set up by the tamils, for the tamils in delhi to "teach them traditional tamil values". why would a north indian kid be sent to these? it will naturally be dominated by tamilians. just like the KV schools in the middle east or singapore are dominated by indians.

Two reasons for a north indian to go to these schools:
1. they are giving high quality education at a relatively lower price (compared to what other good schools charge) as per what Max says
2. Opportunity to expand one's horizons and learn more about another culture

I am not questioning the right of these schools to give preferential admissions to tamils or south indians. i am simply asking whether this is indeed taking place.

there have always been people in TN who wanted to learn hindi and have been doing so. all of us who chose to go to CBSE schools had no choice in the matter till class VIII. we certainly had the choice of not attending a CBSE school if studying hindi was a pain.

rashmun seems unaware of the school situation in chennai. there has always been a demand from upper middle class, mostly brahmin families for a central board education, in which tamil is actively eschewed in favor of hindi.

when i moved to madras, we considered a cbse education, but were put off by the requirement to study hindi. so despite the fact that it has a superior math/science syllabus which may have helped in competitive exams, we chose to go to a state board school. from my father's standpoint it was important for us to have a solid grounding in tamil in addition to english, math, and science. i never had any disagreement with him on that count. it was unthinkable in our family that we'd pick hindi over tamil although several of my cousins ended up doing just that.

Max, please comment on the following:

Hindi Chennai By & By
It is good to know that Hindi is being received better these days in Tamil Nadu (Konjam Hindi, Apr 20). I myself was raised in a staunch anti-Hindi Madras. It was so bad that my Arya Samaj-run school received three bomb threats in seven years because it promoted Hindi. Thanks to my parents, I was forced to choose Hindi and Sanskrit in school. Subsequently, due to my mother’s efforts and my own interest, I learnt to read Tamil as well. The dmk had been propagating the lie that the spread of Hindi would make Tamil extinct. All my fellow South Indians continue to speak their mother tongue with the same ease with which they speak Hindi. Karunanidhi himself, when asked why his grand-nephew was being given so much importance in Delhi, remarked that it was because he had good command over Hindi. So, obviously he has a different yardstick when it comes to his family. It’s high time we started looking beyond petty politics and learned to adapt and embrace other languages and cultures—assimilating them into ours without forsaking ours.

there is nothing to comment. tamilians have been learning hindi by choice and based on need, for a long time. this news is of the dog bites man category. what might be noteworthy is a northindian person voluntarily choosing to learn a southern indian language. that would be news of the man bites dog category. i have not met such a person in my life.

the alumni list of the tamil school has mostly south indian names but it does have some north indian names as well. Further, in the OP it is mentioned that an NI girl in TN voluntarily chose to learn tamil.

DTEA is a central board school. in all respects it is identical to any other CBSE school in delhi or anywhere else in the country. it has the word tamil in the name for the reason i mentioned earlier and bw clarified later in her post as well. perhaps the only difference is that they offer tamil as a third language. which part of this is hard to understand?

Why change the topic? Does it mean that you lost out on this topic - ALSO?

depends on the family. many can speak and understand, but read and write with difficulty if at all.

from wiki:

Over the years, given its record of performance in the Board exams, it
has attracted students from other communities as well
, particularly at
the high school stage when Tamil is not a compulsory subject
.

this explains why some rowdy boys crept into the school.
