Worst day ever

This happened in the Bay Area. Saratoga is known for its high-income population and its excellent schools.

Three teenage boys were arrested Thursday in Santa Clara County on suspicion that they sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl who committed suicide eight days after she was attacked last fall.
The boys, all 16, were taken into custody at two different high schools and booked into juvenile hall in connection with the attack on Audrie Pott, who hanged herself, authorites told Northern California media organizations.
Robert Allard, an attorney who represents the victim's family, said students shared photos of the attack on their cellphones. Pott posted on her Facebook page that her life was "ruined" and that she was enduring the "worst day ever" shortly before she took her life, Allard said.

What isn't being reported in this article or in the linked Mercury News story are allegations that pictures were taken of the assault, which were then widely distributed from person to person within the victim's high school community. Being 15 years old means taking the pictures was production of child pornography, and everyone who sent them over their phones or the internet is guilty of interstate distribution of child pornography. Elsewhere in the country families have been split apart because a parent photographed their infant playing in a bathtub, and precocious teens who snap a pic of their consensual escapades become lifelong Sex Offender List registrants. It's sad that when a real sexual crime occurs, with hundreds of people distributing pornographic images of a child who then killed herself (ostensibly in part due to this added victimization), that police, prosecutors, and even the news media seem to be brushing that under the rug.
