why single him out? yes he has the highest economy rate, but it's not like any of the others have lit the stadium on fire. and he did just fine in the first innings. they're beating us minus morkel. shame.

Just when I thought our bowling needed dentures, it grew a couple of canines. Thank heavens. Hope we eke out a draw.

If India draws full credit should go shami. Dhoni will be questioned for why he did not bring him earlier.

SA chase down 400+ in one dayers and can get 16 runs from 3 overs with 3 wickets remaining?

Sa was not looking for a draw till last over. Philander refused a run for a chance to slog in penultimate.

did you not know the rule differences between test matches and ODIs? they can have all the men on the boundary in test matches, not so in ODIs. difficult to pull it off in test matches.

Pat symcox will be a relieved man. Till the end, when five overs were left, his pronouncement was that it would be a tie.

16 runs were needed in 3 overs (18 balls), that could have been scored in ones and twos when fielders are back.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:southindian wrote:What a bunch of loser chokers if SA are playing for a draw.confuzzled dude wrote:Brigadier HK (Retd) wrote:If India draws full credit should go shami. I know the rules and also know a bit about innovative batting. They pulled off 420+ runs and completely stopped in the end.
SA were losers in the end. These idiots were defending and playing maiden overs. Chokers.

A comment on cricinfo
hmmm: "For me SA has choked ... I wouldnt consider this a draw. India has 'won' a draw and SA has 'lost' a draw. With morkel, phil and steyn in the wings, they should have the license to go all guns blazing in the last 2 overs and if two of them had fallen they cud have always gone to the defensive route."

What with Pujara, Kholi, Ishant (can't he shut his mouth until he reaches some 300 wickets?) all talking as if they have already won this test.
As always I am right....SA would have, could have, and should have won. draw by just 8 runs with 3 wkts in hand and 2 overs? Did BCCI instant wire a few millions to the CSA?
I just woke up and saw the cricinfo. My sleeping and not watching is what saved India.

Don't go by the numbers alone, they closed the shop after Du Plessis's run out. Morkel is not 100%. They probably would've lost had they went for it, we have seen this movie way too many times before (in test matches). Having said that my conclusion still is "India survived" not "Saffies Choked".

agree and ishant and shami were bowling their hearts out. they actually bowled well. just a bit of assistance from the pitch and they would have got more. there were plenty of edges. shami is really impressive to watch. nice smooth action and bowls quick. a bit like steyn himself.

Re: India vs SA
why didnt Rohit bowl? Didn't he bowl off spinners in ODIs? Sometimes, Dhoni has the habit of forgetting the existence of some bowlers in the team. With 460 runs in the bag, he should have tried him at 230-250 for 4.
to see that they scored 8 runs in some last 6 overs is total surrender. Looks like Ashwin is just like Turbinator. He could not get wickets on THIS breaking track that kept low?
How I miss Venkat and Prasana...They would have run the team over on this track (or even Kumble).

Re: India vs SA
saying plenty is understating it. the edges built the runs total that suddenly gave them the idea that they could chase down the target. as dhoni later regretted, he set an attacking field too much and for too long. shami was very impressive. though ishant has improved and is bowling to wicket now, he is not impressive. as arun lal mentioned, he does not hold the seam like shami (ishant holds the fore finger and second finger joint, to hold the ball, instead of slightly apart) and releases the ball at an angle, all of which go to reduce his pace.MaxEntropy_Man wrote: there were plenty of edges.

haha @ the word even before kumble! when we have bowlers who allow us to say even kumble, we'll have a really world beating attack. don't think we're there yet.

Here I was comparing Ashwin with Venkat and Prasanna - who are all off spinners. Kumble is a leg break bowler who bowled 3 to 4 googlies (off spin) an over. Kumble was pacy but Venkat and Prasanna were accurate (but of different style) and looked for that single patch or crack to exploit.

just started looking at pras's record. many of his successes have come against NZ. in australia he has had ONE success in sydney in the late 70s against a weak aussie team with all its star players away playing for packer. let me look at his other successes.
basically his away performance is a nothing record if you take away the weakest opposition of the time, NZ.

Re: India vs SA
only kallis looked dangerous in the middle today (poor guy got out to a bad decision). the rest were happy defending, getting edges and punishing the occasional bad ball. but before you knew it, the scoreboard read 300+ with no loss of wickets after kallis and the game suddenly changed. very lucky guys, the south africans.

Different times and not fair to compare but till:
"those" spinners had 150 to 200 runs to defend most of the times. except for 3 or 4 great fielders, the rest were fat duds. They had no pace bowler support from the other end, which adds pressure to the batsmen. finally, i was talking about the "breakthroughs." They may not have run through a side man times, but whenever there was a bowling change there was "anticipation" and they did take 6, 7 , 8wickets with the < 200 runs had to bowl with.
certainly ashwin not taking a wicket on this breaking track on a final day is indeed a disgrace to Indian spin - what with 450 runs on board and a much better fielding side. And, we are not even talking about viv richards, Kanhai, kallicharan, chappells, walters, Gooch and Turners here.

Re: India vs SA
MOM virat kohli. this guy talked like a mature player at the awards ceremony. him and pujara, he confessed, for the time they were at crease, kept just asking each other if they were in the line of the ball while defending -- that was their only conversation. terrific test temperament kohli has displayed (that pujara already has in abundance).
no body notices the absence of srt, dravid, laxman, ganguly. but everybody notices the absence of kapil dev, still.

First amla. Then a draw. Bcci has too much power.
Assuming this game is really played on the grounds India deserves praise for salvaging a draw out of near certain loss.
What a test. Both sides struggled against odds and proved their critics wrong.
Over all grading:
du plissis, de villers., kohli and pujara. Get an A for technique and temperment.
given conditions sa bowlers came down a bit and Indian bowlers went up a notch. However 4th inning performance of Zak and ashwini is below expectations. Irrespective of the number of wickets, sammi is going to be great for Indian cricket. His personal story is also great.
Philander did alright for sa.
Greame., Alvin, rahane, vijay made positive contributions.
shikar dhawan and rohit sharma. Still flat track bullies.

it is also not fair to refer to them nostalgically to bash the current crop of bowlers when their own record when judged more objectively is not that great. i'm guilty of it myself too. chandra's is probably better than most. doshi had his moments too. i have to look at it more carefully which i plan to do during the break. they were good for the era and were the best we had. we had to make do with them because realistically until kapil showed up there were no options. what else were we going to do? and with the limitations they had, they did reasonably well. it is my sense that if you take away kapil and kumble our bowling attack has always been weak. those were our only two consistent matchwinning bowlers. we are a nation of batting legends and worshippers. we always have to scrape and make do with what we have for bowlers barring flashes of brilliance now and then. we have never had a period when we've had fast bowlers coming out of our ears like pakistan had at one time and for all our tall tales about spin, the actual record besides kumble isn't all that impressive.

I don't think their bowling records are much different abroad. If anything Kumble looked average abroad when compared to his home record.
Coming to now, if not for that self-destructing Sreesanth, our bowling would've been in a better shape.
