For the sake of the argument, let us ask, When a Dalit or a backward caste person gets selected as an IAS officer, does he go to his old poor village and marry the daughter of a person who is doing menial jobs to eke out a living?” He does not. Does he bring a lot of his boyhood friends and help them in various ways? No! Hence, the strategy for the nation should be to develop schemes that move all the people (Dalits and backward caste people) up the economic and social ladders. It is easier to reserve a fraction of jobs and it takes significant planning and effort in execution of the plans. India should focus on the skill development, education and job readiness for all poor people. Again, general schemes targeted towards groups of people only lead to official corruption. There should be contracts between individuals and government for mutual commitment to make the upward move.

Rishi,

all this is good, but the best way to get rid of caste and casteism in society and make the caste system irrelevant is to stop using caste officially, such as asking questions about caste in census forms and using caste to grant privileges, benefits and quotas in education and jobs etc.
