spent a satisfying afternoon at the MFA with offspring-1. they had an exhibition of the works of jamie wyeth who comes from a family of american artists. he paints mainly from monhegan island in maine. his themes are the shoreline of maine with its rocky crags, churches, steeples, and barnyards.  a frequent subject was his wife phyllis, an equistrienne who lost the use of both of her legs at a very young age.  here is wyeth painting inferno:

another painting i enjoyed looking at was that of JFK. he in fact turned down the official commission from the white house, because he didn't want to be dictated to by officialdom. in fact he painted this after the assassination:

we also spent a considerable time at the asian exhibit looking at second century limestone and sandstone sculptures from all over india, but particularly buddhist sculptures from andhra pradesh, cambodia, vietnam, and thailand, and chola bronzes of hindu iconography.  the reach of hinduism and buddhism as they spread out from india to southeast asia is quite remarkable. these sculptures tell a wonderful story. we finished off the evening by spending the last half hour at the permanent impressionist exhibit which contains a decent collection of monets, renoirs, caillebottes (sp?), and a few pissaros. my favorite in this collection (strictly post impressionist) is van gogh's ravine:

we finished the evening off eating dessert crepes and drinking iced coffee.
