I fondly recall my boyhood days in Madurai when we used to make a trip to the Vaigai river to immerse the clay statue of Pillayaar.

Immersion in the ocean or river used to be a tradition in the old days. Our common friend was just a year old when both his parents died being swept away by the waves at the marina beach in 1960 during such an event. Sad.
