Re: Jayalalitha Jayaram
EXCELLENT overview of TN politics and scandals over the last 30 years. A good read for all those who have not heard about TN politics by the DMK & Co.
"I am all for prosecuting and punishing corruption in public life. If Jayalalitha had been convicted in 1997 I may have had lesser sympathy for her. Its not that she redeemed herself completely its just that I see others who have committed murders, instigated murders, even a rumored rape of a TV anchor, been corrupt on a grander scale have all escaped punishment and are acting with smug righteousness when all they should be doing is sticking their head several feet into the sand and dreading their own day of retribution."
EXACTLY my views and what I stated in a post when she was convicted (Max assumed I was supporting the Iyengar Yaanai).
"The finger of suspicion points to Azhagiri on the Tha. Krishnan murder. That case was ignominiously closed during Karunanidhi's tenure when witnesses became hostile. A case relating to burning a newspaper office resulting in the death of two employees, instigated by Azhagiri, was also let to die. In a corruption case relating to Stalin one of the witnesses, a friend, conveniently committed suicide along with his entire family including a toddler."
Damn... hope someone adds all the rapes that Stalin was supposed to have committed in the 70s on college campuses.

But her time has come now while those of others is yet to. In India's legal system, someone powerful getting convicted is so difficult that we need to applaud it 'unconditionally' each time it happens.

If Jaya is punished for what she did, there are many who deserve even more punishment. It is time that they all are dragged out and put away. Crooks like Sonia, Mulayam, Jagan, Laloo, Soren, K'nidhi, etc., etc., should be history.

good blog. largely sympathetic to her, but a fair accounting of her life and TN politics. i hate both parties in TN, but there is no alternative unfortunately. never in a million years will tamilians accept either of the two national parties because voting for them will involve unacceptable compromises on cultural and linguistic issues. i wish there was a better local third alternative.
difficult as it is, we shouldn't fall into the trap of feeling sympathy for her because there are bigger crooks out there for two reasons. one smAartha has already pointed out. the second is that if one is caught for speeding, pointing out a guy who was going even faster than you will never win sympathy with law enforcement. MK's time hopefully will come before he kicks the bucket, but if it doesn't there are plenty of thugs in his circle to convict and throw in jail.

MK will not land in jail even if he is convicted of a crime - he is too old and let off on humanitarian grounds. Hopefully, he will be punished mentally by jailing Kani, Dayalu, Marans, and hopefully Stalin and Azhagiri.

In the wider interest of Tamil and Tamil Nadu, JL should get bail and remain a political power in TN. In the wider interest of Tamil and Tamil Nadu, MK should live some more years.
I the mean time an alternate power house party and leadership should emerge to counter Congress-BJP-AAP from taking foothold in TN.
Ramadoss is too selfish-willl sell out TN although he has Tamil in his heart. Vaiko is a mystery to me. Knew him well. Not a selfish fellow. I think BJP has some secret about him and blackmainling him (may be a far out theory). I do not see any other explanation of his support for BJP for many years now.
Seeman is of questionable fellow. Intially he came out strong, then his actions are questionable.
