Happy Deepavali
...to all here. After so many years, this festival has [finally] ceased to rake up painful memories for me. Also I am thinking of mortality [strangely] this morning maybe because I lost someone special yesterday to cancer, but it has a different connotation for me. I am grieving differently and I think this is the right way to do so.
Coincidentally, read this somewhere this morning, almost the first thing I read this morning:-)
"I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor, I was back to pondering my mortality - Mitch Hedberg "
Well, like someone here said[might have been Kris] growing up is overrated:-) it sure is!

Re: Happy Deepavali
HAPPY DIWALI IMPY. LOTS LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
look what we discovered on dhanteras today:
that was the stash of emperor gorge v, i rupee, silver coins my father used to collect for dhanteras. that's the share we got after he distributed his stash among 4 (3 siblings + him).
this is what my wife bought today for dhanteras:
as my brother in law (who is a jeweller) informs me, the coin my wife purchased is fake (but not so that of what my parents purchased). his reckoning is that the price at which we bought it (rs 800) assures same silver content (91%) but the coin is fake for it is out of market circulation.

"Death is part of life". This was a dialogue by a gothic chic in a forgettable English movie I watched over the weekend. What she says is true - death is inescapable. All the goals, aspirations, wealth, power, etc go for a toss if you suddenly die. So better to celebrate live when we are alive than brood over death.

Happy Deepavali/Diwali Impedimenta and Everyone!
Best wishes.
Came across this explanation in Tamil about the word "Deepavali". It was new to me..and could be right or wrong.
In any case..wanted to come by and wish you all!
Take care.
Best wishes.

Technically, it is on Thursday here in the US and on 24th the Friday in Australia. The northern and Southern latitudes are the reason for this difference - since it is also based on the Lunar calendar.

Nope.. then we should have celebrated earlier. In India it is 21st night and 22nd morning.
All new moon and full moon occur a day after it happens in India (July-Dec) and then same day or slightly earlier (Jan-July) due to the latitude.
But, then Hawaii is also on 23rd tomorrow.

Nice halwai scene there. Today we got the yearly package from XH's parents. Unfortunately, this came from mumbai, and not our hometown. When it comes from hometown it's a mix of our city's best, and homemade. But chalega.
After struggling alongwith son to open the super tight packaging, Diwali has finally begun!!!
HAPPY DEEPAWALI.
btw, this time i kept the count. 80% of my northie friends wished me Deepavali. 100%, so far, wished me Diwali. Talk about ulti ganga.
PS: Both kids don't care about the day, but they wanted to take a holiday today coz it's excused. And madam wanted to avoid two quizzes. Am gonna wake her up in a few and tell her to clean the house.

Re: Happy Deepavali
I think Deepaavali is Sanskrit and Diwali is its Hindi variation. "aavali" in Sanskrit means row, so Deepaavali is a row of deepas ("dia"s). Same goes with Svaraavali (a row of musical notes), Ratnaavali (a row of gems), etc.madrasi_idiot wrote:my south indian friends in fb wished me "happy deepavali." i have no clue really. what is right? i think it is generally the case that southern indian languages more faithfully reproduce sanskritic words and sounds and hindi morphs them by swallowing consonants and vowels whole.

Yup. I'm not sure if Diwali is even a correct word. Its Deepaavali (rows of light).indophile wrote:I think Deepaavali is Sanskrit and Diwali is its Hindi variation. Diwali is shortened from Deepaavali, much like 'cud' from 'could'.

oops forgot about new clothes. let me tell older to wear something new. I am sure there is something new for son too, as we did new season shopping recently. I think I have plenty of new sweaters (ok not plenty, but I had bought a few post-season last year as they become cheaper then).
My sister had mailed me a new salwar-suit for Diwali, but it hasn't come yet. I was debating if I will wear it anyway, coz I don't wear salwar suit/sari unless it's for a party or get together. I was also wondering how I will wear it, coz when I dress up I like to take a pic, then I like to post it on FB, and I couldn't have done that, coz the salwar-suit was gifted to her by her bff who is also on my FB. bff gifted my sis like 7-8 salwar-suits in one go, out of which 1 was a bit bigger for her, and she doesn't like that color on her, so she thought it would fit me better, as I am bigger than her and I basically wear any color, whether it looks good on me or not. Anyway, will wear that for some party.

Not necessarily. When you lose weight and become more fit, you can get more vigorous with your exercise regimen thus improving on your BMI.
