americans bashed...

in my opinion, a large part of the strength of the u.s. can be attributed to the abundance of its natural resources, total and per capita: oil, natural gas, coal, uranium, land area, coast line, rivers, and lakes. and because they were able to start over with a nearly-clean slate.
(for example, they were not as constrained as others to worship the murthys at thirupathy before sending a rocket off into space, or force-feed their infant daughter with."junnu"; nor did they feel obliged to ill-treat large segments of society because their hindu ancestors and scriptures said so.)
however, they have not done half as well as they could have; they used their resources badly, and oppressed minorities. they spent anywhere from 6 trillion to 14 trillion dollars altogether on the cold war alone, depending on which estimate you believe, and what kind of dollars they are.
and that doesn't account for the spending on the arms race by the other countries. for comparison, the gdp of the u.s. now is about 18 trillion dollars.
moreover, christianity is still a strong morive force in their lives.
I suspect that, with their cold-war expenditure of resources, they could have wiped out poverty and illiteracy around the world.
note: i estimate that ejmr's membership is only about 30% to 40% u.s.; the rest are mostly european and latin american, with some chinese and a sprinkling of indiapeepals.
