I'd love to see Trump and Republican congress cut welfare benefits.

CD,

You have fallen into the lazy intellectual trap of shallow research.
Quote from article posted above.

"In other words, due in part to low voter turnout among the impoverished, it may not be that the majority of constituents who vote to turn a state “red” are the ones causing a state to have a higher level of federal aid in its state budget. Another way of putting this is that the majority of poor people who are reliant upon federal aid to make ends meet may not be voting majority Republican in a given state."

If you look at food stamps,  USA helps 46 M Americans of which 19M are white and 11.5M are African American.  But if you convert the numbers to percentages, it means 1 in 10 white and 3 in 10 blacks get food stamps.

Data needs to be properly presented to get real understanding.

Helping people in need is an essential part of Govt.s function to keep social order and to help every one get a chance to succeed.

The problem with red states is not they have more people receiving food stamps. The problem with red states is that they are not helping those in need to improve their ability to scale out of poverty.

TBT you are wrong. There are lots of people in red states who vote against their own interests. There's a recent book that came out written by a young white man who grew up in Appalachia in poverty by the name J.D.Vance. The name of the book is Hillbilly Elegy. Among other things he explains the sociocultural reasons behind the hypocrisy behind decrying welfare while at the same time benefiting from it.

A review of the book in the New Yorker:

http://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/the-lives-of-poor-white-people

I posted my own review in an earlier thread. There are plenty of hypocrisy amongst the red state welfare recipients. You'll for example read about the young man who gave up a perfectly good job because the hours didn't suit him, went on welfare, and then bemoans the Obama economy. IMO such people need to be severely thrashed across their behinds.

From a 4 year old article by Krugman:

http://mobile.nytimes.com/2012/02/17/opinion/krugman-moochers-against-welfare.html

Finally, Cornell University’s Suzanne Mettler points out that many beneficiaries of government programs seem confused about their own place in the system. She tells us that 44 percent of Social Security recipients, 43 percent of those receiving unemployment benefits, and 40 percent of those on Medicare say that they “have not used a government program.”

Presumably, then, voters imagine that pledges to slash government spending mean cutting programs for the idle poor, not things they themselves count on. And this is a confusion politicians deliberately encourage. For example, when Mr. Romney responded to the new Obama budget, he condemned Mr. Obama for not taking on entitlement spending — and, in the very next breath, attacked him for cutting Medicare.

Max,

Your examples are similar to welfare queen propaganda used by republicans.  Repub go around to find few extreme cases of welfare system misuse and use them to paint all welfare people are lazy and unwilling to fight to become economically self sufficient.

No where did i say whites do not get welfare nor did I say white welfare people are perfect and good people.  I am just pointing out the fact that people that elected republicans (at least majority of them) are receiving no more fed aid than citizens of other states. The article I posted explains that welfare recipients (obviously poor) do not vote in large numbers. It is not republicans problem. It is the democratic party's  problem. They have to convince their voters to vote in every election cycle in large numbers. Failure to do so lead to disasters like 2010 election.

King and the activists braved death and violence in 1950s and 60s to go south and fight for voting rights. Today it is much more easier to organize all over USA but democratic party is listless and has no plans to reverse its slide among white working class, military families, religious families, certain groups of blacks and entire south.  Go beyond presidential election and check what is happening around the country in state legislatures and local councils.

Economically and socially democratic party has the backing of largest groups of voters in USA. But democratic voters have excuses to not vote.  More democrats act against their self interest by not voting in elections. Republicans are more organized and show up in large numbers where needed.

Discussion here is about red states and their aversion for welfare.
