The Times oped page has a piece about Nehru... I haven't read his autobiography, but the quote here makes me want to.

In “Toward Freedom,” he writes: “I have become a queer mixture of the East and the West, out of place everywhere, at home nowhere. Perhaps my thoughts and approach to life are more akin to what is called Western than Eastern, but India clings to me, as she does to all her children, in innumerable ways.” He continues: “I am a stranger and alien in the West. I cannot be of it. But in my own country also, sometimes I have an exile’s feeling.”

I really enjoyed reading the Discovery of India a long time ago.

BTW, watched Gurinder Chaddha's new movie The Viceroy's House recently. It is available on Netflix. Interesting movie focusing on the Mountbattens and their staff.

Similar feelings are experienced by NRIs also. A friend of mine who lived abroad for a lot time came back to India. He chose Auroville because it is the ideal mix of small town with fellow Western expatriates.

I don't know if extremely brilliant Sikular scholars will do what your friend has done. They will probably behave like Siddharth Varadarajan, Burkha Dutt or Rajdeep Sardesai and complain about Modi investing a lot of money on infrastructure projects while minorities are "suffering" because of "inadequate" reservations......

They never take a bold decision of their own but endlessly find reasons to criticize Modi.
