For #8, I meant - who was the first Indian playing for India. Sorry for the confusion.

If the lion is not extinct, my next guess would be the cheetah.

I've forgotten the details but it's one of those grammatical peculiarities found in Sanskrit. Basically, the proper rules of grammar would dictate a particular usage ("jayati" in this case) but in some exceptional cases, some other rules apply(hence "jayate"). I've no idea what the exception is in this case.

Re: Wednesday Filler Trivia
1. What is peculiar about the phrase “satyameva jayate?” ---- "satyameva jayate" is from the verse "satyameva jayate, naanritam....." of Mundakopanishad (Truth alone triumphs, falsehood never will). The phrase is grammatically wrong, however (the correct way to say it is -- "satyameva jayati"). Notwithstanding this anamoly, Panini bows his head and accepts its authority as correct because the phrase came down from Vedas (Vedanta, actually).
2. If Salim became Jehangir, Khurram became Shajahan, what did Aurangzeb become? ---- Alamgir
3. What was Shivaji’s mother’s name? ---- Jijibai
4. By what other name do we all know Manikarnika Nivarkar? ----- Jhansi-ki-Rani - Laxmibai
5. Who said the famous words “sab lal hojayega?” (everything will be red) ----- Maharajah Ranjit Singh. When he was shown a map of India wherein the British dominions were colored red, he commented "sab lal hojayega" in future. This he said when he was at the peak of his power.
6. What big cat became completely extinct in India? ----- Cheetah
7. Who were the two sisters of Jawaharlal Nehru? ------ Vijayalakshmi Pandit and Krishna Huteesingh
8. Who was the first Indian to score a century in each inning in a test match? Where? When? Against who? ----- Vijay Hazare, Adelaide (Australia), for India against Australia, in 1947 (this is what I know. But the cricket enthusiasts on this forum may have a different answer).
9. When was the last time India won a gold medal in Olympics for hockey? ----- Moscow in 1980 (if you don't mind the asterisk on thoise Olympics) or Tokyo in 1964 (with no asterisks:-).
10. Who is the most recent Indian winner of the Booker Prize? And the book that won him the prize? Aravind Adiga for "The White Tiger."
