Cool comforts for UP prisoners

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday announced a slew of facilities for prisoners days after Raghuraj Pratap Singh, who has spent time in prison, took over as the state's jail minister. The facilities include water coolers, clean toilets and public call offices (PCOs).

Besides this, imprisoned couples lodged in separate jails or districts will now be lodged in the same jail on humanitarian grounds. The prisoners will be able to have visitors twice a week. They were earlier allowed to have visitors once a month.

The state prisons' department has been given 90 days for implementation of the reforms in the first phase. The second phase will begin in October. "We are not promising the moon to jail inmates. We only believe that they should be treated as human beings," said Singh, who had around two dozen criminal cases against him at one time and has spent several years in jail.

The minister had earlier ordered free surgery for inmates suffering from cataract, appendicitis and hernia in UP jails. As a result, 280 inmates underwent the surgeries across the state and the target was completed within the stipulated time of seven days. "Cent per cent post surgery recovery has been reported," the minister said.

The minister said specially manufactured telephone instruments available in the market with a price tag ranging from a few thousands to Rs five lakh would be used in PCOs. He said these instruments have inbuilt conversation recording system.

The facility will initially be available for convicts and installed inside the office of the deputy jailor to check misuse. Prisoners have long been caught using cellphones in UP jails.

The minister announced a ban on the use of Vanaspati for cooking in jail kitchens. Refined oil would replace Vanaspati to upgrade the quality of food.

The idea of installing air coolers earlier mooted was dropped.

And why is the UP government being so liberal and generous with its money ?

Will this not increase the number of crimes ? criminals thinking'" better to remain in prison that on their own " ....

the minister responsible for jails has himself been in jail for almost two years when mayawati was in power. if mayawati returns to power in future, this guy may end up going back to jail again. never the less, the thought of installing air coolers was somewhat ridiculous. in the summer months, we would have poor people coming to UP and committing petty crimes with the hope of being put up in jails with air coolers.

the great philosopher, thinker, seeker of truth and selfless observer of his own self, mr toothseeker, has the following to say about the indian democracy.

Democracy has lost its very definition in India. Normal people BEG to meet the CM in their states. Being elected has come to mean that they have become MASTERs. Nothing can be far from truth than this. People elect a MLA or CM to be their responsible servants. Thats why even IPS and IAS officers, who have to go through tough selection process, report to these MAIN SERVANTS of people. Its a shame that these MPs and MLAs act as ALL-POWERFUL Masters of the very people who put them in their spot. India is NOT a democratic country. Its a country ruled by foolish a**holes, with power gone into their head. The power they achieved by looting, r*ping, and killing. Mother fkkers!
