Integration in the real world Empty Integration in the real world

Post by Rishi Mon Apr 22, 2013 6:51 am

This week, you will not be evaluating any integrals - just setting them
up. There are a couple reasons for this. One is to keep distinct
skills separate. This weeks exercises
will only test you on your ability to find the integral that
solves a problem, not on how to evaluate it. A more important reason is
that the vast majority of integrals that come up in
the real world do not have elementary antiderivatives, so we
have no hope of getting an exact answer. Of far greater practical
importance is the ability to set up the integral,
and approximate the result (either using Riemann sums, or
fancier things like Simpson's rule).
