i have nothing against tendulkar. i've enjoyed watching him bat. but he is one of the greats of the modern era alongside ponting, dravid, lara, and kallis. he by no measure eclipses the rest of the four gentlemen in that group, at least as measured by performance in test cricket. only indian fans and the indian media make him a god.

and this line about statistical measures not being the only things that matter doesn't cut it. measures are important if we are going to throw around words like "best" and "greatest".

dravid had one benefit -- freedom from the expectation of fans. tendulkar totally took that off his shoulders. for that tendulkar stands alone. i am quite sure dravid is thankful to tendulkar for that.

There is more: For a man who built his reputation not just on supreme batsmanship but also on his unwavering modesty, impeccable manners and an evident pleasure in being part of (and never greater than) the team on which he played, there has been an unlovely whiff of selfishness in his reluctance to give way to younger players, in his limpetlike clinging to his place, and in his relentless pursuit of milestones. No cricketer has ever played 200 test matches before. No other cricketer will. Sachin managed the feat only because he has batted on for 24 years.

There's an exception. The great cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar retired when he was in prime of his career. His opinion is that one should retire when someone asks you why you are retiring and not when someone asks you why are you not retiring.

this very same gavaskar in later years unfortunately became a BCCI toady and a tool of the fattie-in-chief and did not suggest what he himself believed to tendulkar. in fact he probably egged him on to keep playing.

Really! Ponting averaged in mid-forties throughout '90s when superior bowlers were operating and pitches weren't as flat. That is where Sachin's scores over him in my book over the likes of Ponting; There is no doubt that Ponting fared better since the turn of the century and played more match winning knocks than Sachin. And the biggest intangible that is applicable to all Indian bats is that they never had the luxury of not facing world class bowlers at the highest level, like Vivian Richards or Ponting which am sure helped them pad their averages a bit.

Well, there were many calls for Dravid's retirement at least for a year. He bounced back alright but last couple years of his career hasn't been kind to him.

didn't kumble abruptly retire? he was the captain for one test and retired in the next one, if i recall right.

In Tamil Nadu if a villager finds a huge rock he'd put some sandal paste and kumkum over it and leave a silent prayer behind. Another villager would plant a trident or spear next to it with a lemon stuck at the point and prostrate before leaving. Soon other villagers would add bells and bricks making it into a temple of worship.
