I find desis owning two or three houses and land in India, a couple of houses here, fancy cars, jewelry etc. Don't you find it a headache and a burden?

It applies even to education. Parents who were happy with getting an education at Government Arts college two decades ago are now upset that their children got accepted only at places like Virginia Tech.

Right now there is a nth cousin who is going to Nankodai Naicker College of engineering wants to go (only) to Columbia, UPenn or MIT. Not that there is anything wrong with that but believes he is somehow entitled to admission.

According to Velukkudi Krishnan (Who was an Accountant or senior Finance guy) now giving KathaKalakshebam, the real estate prices increase due to ppl having more than one house (more than necessary for one family).

i don't find others owning such things a burden or a headache as long as they don't bore me with their bragging.

Not sure what's wrong in owning all that 'if you can afford it'. I technically own one house, but based on my current situation, it is way beyond my means. So, I am forever worried about its mortgage. But then, if I rented instead, I would be worried about that even more.

What do you do with all the money that you and your husband earn?

Live frugally and hoard it all in the bank?
Keep what you require and donate the rest to charities?
Invest in the stock market? (that's more burdensome than investing in the real estate market and Jewelry/precious metals).
Blow the money to enjoy life? (same as buying fancy cars, going on fancy vacations, etc. note that fancy is subjective)

right.

owning property is a lot of work especially if it is just an investment. unless there is someone local to run with things, it is quite a burden and a lot of paperwork. some people relish these things and don't find it a pain and that's good. i like my life as simple as possible and can't be bothered.

Rishi,
I generally agree with Bw views, however what is wrong with increasing ones wealth through.real estate or stocks or other methods. Isn't material gain primary motivation for most or all of Indian immigrants to Usa?
