Woman dies as doctors attend minister’s function
CHANDIGARH: A 65-year-old woman died of a heart attack at a civil hospital in Hoshiarpur in Punjab on Thursday after doctors, busy attending a programme organized for the Union minister of state for healthSantosh Chaudhary, allegedly refused to entertain her son's request for assistance.
Chaudhary, a Lok Sabha MP from Hoshiarpur, was in her hometown to participate in a Central government function Swasthya Jan Soochna Abhiyan, a mere 100 metres away from the hospital.
When the ailing woman, Kanti Devi, was brought to the emergency ward of the hospital, all doctors, including civil surgeon Surjit Singh, were at the function, Devi's son Loveraj Singh alleged.
With no doctor returning to attend his mother for about 40 minutes, an agitated Singh, who works as a security guard in a tractor company, ran to the function venue outside the hospital.
Singh, along with his family members, then disrupted the function and screamed at Chowdhary and protested with the doctors.
"We wandered from the emergency wing of the hospital to the function twice. But doctors kept telling us they would return only after the function got over," a 42-year-old Loveraj told TOI over phone.
Chowdhary refused to take the blame for the woman's death. "It was a natural death," she said and left the function. The civil surgeon agreed there was a delay in sending a cardiologist due to rush and VIP security. "Our heart specialist did reach the ward but there was a delay," said Surjit Singh. He also said the hospital will commission a medical inquiry and cooperate with the police on the alleged lapse if the victim was ready for it.
