"In what could be called the mother-of-all-scams at the state level, YSR’s Jalayagnam will surely rank up there along with the 2Gs and Coalgates. In 2004, YSR launched perhaps the most ambitious water project in the country with the idea of lifting the flood waters of the Krishna and Godavari rivers to quench the thirst of two crore residents and provide irrigation to 100 lakh acres of arid and dryland in the state"

"Jalayagnam’s core idea was to lift the flood waters of the Krishna and Godavari rivers to reservoirs so that 100 lakh acres of arid and dry land in the state could be irrigated – most of it in the parched regions of Rayalaseema and Telangana. Very little of the water actually got tapped, but politicians of various hues satiated their thirst for easy money, all right."

"There are several similarities between the coal blocks allocation scandal (Coalgate) and the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s Jalayagnam irrigation “loot-for-everyone” scam in Andhra Pradesh. First, there is the similarity in numbers. The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) put the value of the Coalgate losses at Rs 1.86 lakh crore. This figure is also the latest estimate of the Jalayagnam project’s bloated costs. It started with Rs 1.1 lakh crore and is now at Rs 1.86 lakh crore, and could go even further as projects get unduly delayed."

He must have got the idea from Karunanidhi's famous Veeranam water project - the mega looting case in those days of 70s. Even today the 150 mile long project shows evidence. There are huge concrete pipes lying along the path that are being used as "concrete" modern houses.

Another great one was the project to clean the madras Coouvum river. actually the river was better before the project started and ended in disaster.

DMK, indeed, is the trendsetter. They pioneered scams involving all four elements - land, water, energy/power and air(spectrum). Their next should be related to space. May be 'brighten a black hole' or 'straighten the milky way' kind Smile

Already they are into space cheating. Maran's Spice jet was selling 2 seats at Re 1 and misleading the public. it was asked stop such plans by DGGC

there's nothing under this sun that thambis havent thought of or done first. it's safe to proceed with that assumption when starting any new venture
