Jayanta Bhatta on dhurta Charvakas Empty Jayanta Bhatta on dhurta Charvakas

The Indian philosopher Jayanta Bhatta (circa 9th century AD) was one of the greatest philosophers India has known. He represented the Nyaya school of hindu philosophy and his magnum opus is the 'Nyaya Manjari'--a book which astonishes us even today because of its wide ranging and perceptive contents.

In his 'Nyaya Manjari' Jayanta also writes about the Charvaka school of Indian philosophy. In this context Jayanta says that in his opinion, there are two kinds of Charvakas:
dhurta Charvakas (i.e. scounderels) and susiksita Charvakas (i.e. learned/cultured/cultivated Charvakas)
