We talked about this DAJ some time back. A converted Vaishnavite but decided to retain his Christian name. This guy is pretty simple and unlike our "real" hindu swamys dont "make" movies with actresses and amass wealth. The guy is also a real Thamizh lover.

yes..but he also "preaches" Vaishnavism without explicitly asking people to convert - sort of what the evangelists do.

nothing wrong with that. to me vaishnavite and saivite tamil scripture is also sublime literature. some tamil lovers and scholars of the DK persuasion eschew this part of our tamil identity. to me it is central to our identity in addition to the thirukkuraL, sangam literature, and other secular works like the silappadhikaram, manimegalai etc. i see no reason to reject them.

one of the poems in the d.a.joseph video is a scene that kamban describes from the fratricidal duel between vAli and sugrIvan and describes how vAli discovers that the person who vanquished him is none other than rAmA. it's an amazing testimony to kamban's skill as a poet and his devotion:

மும்மை சால் உலகுக்கெல்லாம் மூலமந்திரத்தை
முற்றும் தம்மையே தமர்க்கு நல்கும் தனிப்பெரும் பதத்தைத்தானே
இம்மையே எழுமை நோய்க்கும் மருந்தினை
இராமா என்னும் செம்மை சேர் நாமம் தன்னை
கண்களில் தெரியக்கண்டான்

Kamba ramayanam is not merely a story but a wonderful repository of Tamil literature with beautiful imageries, poetic cadences, brilliant characterizations and much more dating back well over a thousand years.

I listened to the entire 42 min video of D.A.Joseph and enjoyed it. Here's Ilangai Jeyaraj who also gives an interesting discourse on the subject.

Actually Part 2 (and thereafter) contains more material from Kamba Ramayanam. His Tamil is interesting.
