"It's the economy, stupid!" - that's the theme Bill Clinton, Obama and now Trump used to win the election. Turning a blind eye to others' suffering is probably ingrained in most upper caste Indians. When you see beggars on the road, outside the temple, at traffic intersections, at railway stations etc day after day, at some point you have to develop a thick skin and block it out. In the US,  even the poor have a home with a yard and a car or two. So probably some Indians think "wtf is wrong with these people, if only they got themsleves a college degree they could escape poverty".
