I’m from a large conservative Hindu family. I was raised to be the perfect submissive daughter and I grudgingly still am.

haven't read the article..but choosing more like yielding and non-argumentative mode is an admirable choice, at this time, ie., at your present age and the parents', IMO.

I think she explained it well further:

Some of you might say “move out, be financially independent and fuck em.” Not easy. I’m not even living with them right now and I make money, but I’m kind of emotionally stunted, not prepared.

it would be enormously revealing to find out how these whining young women will free and perhaps encourage their own daughters and sons to spread their wings and fly off on their own.

or will their cashTu, sub-cashTu, and gothram stop them from walking the talk?

If you are suggesting not ALL girls were suppressed, I totally agree with you. I have octogenarian women in my family who were medical doctors or PhDs, and studied in different cities. But if you are trying to hint a ni and si divide by bringing up a shyamala harris, then just remember that first Indian woman doctor was a maharashtrian. First Indian woman pilot was Sarla Thakral. First Indian woman in space was Kalpana Chawla, and Kiran Bedi needs no introduction. You can google the rest.

I don't know much about Chennai culture. But the fact that most of them wore saris starting high school or college, as late as 80s and 90s, can't be a 'choice' thing.

There are a lot of women like Shyamala Gopalan Harris from that generation who stepped outside of bounds imposed by society and did whatever they wanted to do. I'm personally familiar with quite a few of them in my extended family. It's a little difficult to take this kind of whining from a contemporary young Indian woman. Spoilt whiny brat comes to mind.

SGH is the mother of California senator elect, previously attorney general of California, and possible future leader of the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris. SGP raised her and sister Maya as a single mother while pursuing a highly successful academic career with parallel goals uplifting the lives of women of color. An enormously inspiring life.
