Early last week, Republican talking heads were insisting that Romney would win in a landslide, or failing that, win comfortably. They claimed momentum was on their side. Peggy Noonan was one of those pundits, and she wrote last Monday:

Peggy Noonan at http://blogs.wsj.com/peggynoonan/2012/11/05/monday-morning/ wrote:While everyone is looking at the polls and the storm, Romney’s slipping into the presidency. He’s quietly rising, and he’s been rising for a while...

There is no denying the Republicans have the passion now, the enthusiasm. The Democrats do not...

Is it possible this whole thing is playing out before our eyes and we’re not really noticing because we’re too busy looking at data on paper instead of what’s in front of us? Maybe that’s the real distortion of the polls this year: They left us discounting the world around us.

After her detachment from reality was shown up by, well, reality itself, does Noonan admit she is wrong? Not really. Instead, she blames the American people, for being "afraid of change." http://online.wsj.com/article/declarations.html

Next up, Karl Rove.

Days before the election, Rove predicted that Romney would win by a 2% margin in the national vote, with at least 279 electoral votes. He lost by over 3% in the national vote, and secured just 206 electoral votes to Obama's 332. Here is Rove just before the election: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/11/04/karl_rove_predicts_romney_wins_by_2_margin_around_280_electoral_votes.html.

On election night, even as the writing was on the wall, Rove refused to believe reality. He tried to get Fox News to change its call on the state of Ohio. And a couple days later, Rove is back out in the open analyzing the results of the election. In the private sector, a failure as big as Rove's usually results in his being fired summarily.
