You are right about "perdition" in the theological sense. For example, this word can be used in a sentence as follows:
May you incur everlasting perdition for nitpicking the usage of perdition.
I have also seen "perdition" being used to signify loss. For example, this word can be used in a sentence as follows:
Obsessive and excessive preoccupation with the word perdition can lead to perdition of sanity.
Your friend Webster also says:
perdition
Listen See in ThesaurusSee in a sentence
(pər dis̸h′ən)
noun</li>
- Archaic complete and irreparable loss; ruin
- Theol.
- the loss of the soul; damnation
- hell
interestingly, the latin root is 'perditionem' meaning "destruction".

Haha, good find. Thus we come full circle. GC-the-incorrect-word-user is now greeted as GC-the-liberator who frees an old, pre-Christian word that had gotten coopted into narrow theological meaning, and reclaims it for secular use.bw wrote:goodcitizn wrote:Jeremiah Mburuburu wrote:regardless, the meaning of "perdition" remains eternal damnation.goodcitizn wrote:The casteist on this forum is JM. Re: Is Rishi a casteist?
i don't know if he is casteist, but he is certainly a very religious hindu for he is a bovine worshipper. he has even shown a predilection for bovine dictatorship.

Rishi is cute when he displays caste phobia. Cuter when he displays religious ones, but cutest when it comes to the kallu/whitie racial one.

LOL! Yes, he can only see hell from where he is sitting. The only good part about JM is this:
He can jump out of an airplane without a parachute and still survive ... because his inflated ego will cushion the fall.

Re: Is Rishi a casteist?
i think this issue (whether perdition was used correctly) can be resolved only through a such poll. only a poll will satisfy jerri for he is fond of repeatedly quoting the results of one.

Re: Is Rishi a casteist?
FOR THE VOTING MEMBERS OF THIS FORUM ... JM = Perdido
LOST IN TRANSLATION -- Michael J. Sheehan (Member of the Dictionary Society Of North America)
I’ve always found it amusing that the family name Perdue in Perdue Farms, a huge purveyor of chicken, probably comes from the French word meaning lost. You come through our coops, chickie, and you’re dead meat. This in spite of the disclaimer found on their web site:
"Perdue Farms and our farm-family partners share a belief that it is our responsibility to treat the animals in our care with respect." [Poultry Welfare]
But I digress. As a root, -perd- came from a Latin word meaning to destroy or lose; in turn, that came from the Greek of the same meaning. It later morphed into the spiritual sense of moral corruption and ruin, even becoming a substitute word for hell.
Aside from the familiar perdition, the root showed up in a number of words.
• deperdition: loss, waste, destruction by wasting away.
• disperdition: an undoing.
• imperdible: unable to be lost or destroyed.
• ligniperdous: wood-destroying.
• officiperd: the throwing away of one's labor.
• perdido: a person who is considered lost; a desperate or depraved person; a dead person.
• perdifoil: a plant that loses its leaves annually; a deciduous plant.
• perdite: debauched, abandoned, wicked.
• perditious: damnable, pernicious. Also in weakened sense: harmful, undesirable.
