I am considering various chat alternatives, and want to get some user feedback. In the poll, please pick all the features that matter to you. You can indicate which of those are more or less important to you in a reply on this thread.

More details on each option...

Single login-password for both chat and forum: if we don't have this, someone else could claim your forum ID on chat.

Ability to block out users you don't like: you would basically set the chat to ignore a user. Nothing that user posts (dots, slashes or actual messages) will be visible to you.

Archive length: a real archive vs. just the last n lines (n may be 20, 50, or at most 100.)

There should be NO ARCHIVE for pvt chat rooms - the meaning of Private has no meaning then. Main room archive should be unlimited. One can come in and read like phone messages. But, ANY archiving will make people circumspect and curtail their freewheeling conversation in the main. Bcz Someone like Flimmy can "capture" the screen and post it 10 yrs later.

multiple login-passwords will create the same problem that happened in Sulekha Chat. Anyone can come in a familiar handle (or will come in a million handles) abusing people left, right and center. Nobody will know who is real and who is fake. KEEP only ONE login-pswd.

ability to block users is good.

Upps you need some archive - last 50 line perhaps - for private cha in case you step away for a few minutes, but don't want to discontinue an ongoing conversation.

Seriously, what nonsense is this? Have you guys lost sense of perspective? What prevents "Flimmy" from capturing the screen while people are having this freewheeling conversation? Let me understand this logic - so, you are okay with "Flimmy" reading what you say in the chat room, perhaps copy-pasting it into a document or doing a screen capture, at the time you say it, but you only have a problem with it if he comes in later and to do the reading / copy-pasting / screen capturing from the archive?

Why would you say anything in a public chat room that you wouldn't say on this forum? If you don't want something you said to be remembered or recorded in perpetuity, why would you say it in a public chat room? Seriously, if you are so concerned about what you said in a public chat room, do you really think that something like not having a small chat room archive will protect you? Ridiculous! This is like a stripper who strips live on TV demanding that nobody use a DVR to watch her show. If she is so ashamed about what she's showing, perhaps she shouldn't show it on live TV!

Incidentally, I am not surprised that this failure of logic, this nonsense, originated from the shenanigans of whiny women in the chat room and it is Uppili who is supporting it.

It is true that Flimmy can capture it LIVE or later on if archived. The whole idea is to minimize the chances. Not archiving minimizes those chances.

Next, there was a law at one time that the viewers could not should not record TV shows on DVDs. Supreme court ruled against it and the DVD burners showed up everywhere - about 10 years ago.

People can say something unwittingly in a heated discussion and if such information happens to be personal, then not archiving will minimize the damage.

So the objective is minimization of damage.

LOL! What should I do to heat up the discussion so that people say something unwittingly?
