Look at Doucheman in this thread on beef ban! He claims the following:

Doucheman wrote:when there is so much of poverty and malnutrition amongst the poor in India it seems cruel to ban the sale of meat at least in India. Besides, there are places in India where vegetables are not found in abundance and are hence expensive. Meat, including beef, provides a source of cheap protein to people living in these areas (like north-east india for example).

How sick and moronic can this guy get in his blind hatred? Every single non-vegetarian person anywhere in India knows that meat is more expensive than vegetarian food. And this chutiya Doucheman claims that meat is essential for the poor people because they cannot afford vegetables. For comparison purposes, here's the comparative cost of meat (chicken) and other vegetarian food items in Guwahati (which is in Northeast India):

Milk (regular), (1 liter) 44.33 Rs
Loaf of Fresh White Bread (500g) 27.83 Rs
Rice (white), (1kg) 37.00 Rs
Eggs (12) 60.01 Rs
Local Cheese (1kg) 342.50 Rs
Chicken Breasts (Boneless, Skinless), (1kg) 180.00 Rs
Apples (1kg) 151.67 Rs
Oranges (1kg) 64.67 Rs
Tomato (1kg) 35.00 Rs
Potato (1kg) 19.12 Rs
Lettuce (1 head) 30.00 Rs

i had once posted on sulekha an article on the differences between vegetarian and meat proteins from the standpoint of the resources - energy, land, and water that it takes to produce a unit calorie of nutrition. there is simply no way in hell that meat can be cheaper than vegetarian sources of protein.

My son's biology teacher gave up meat and became a vegetarian purely for 'environmental reasons'. A lot more environmental resources need to be expended to produce an lb of animal protein vs an lb of plant protein.
