Nearly two hundred years ago, until the nineteenth century, electricity was not available to people from power grid, electric generators, electric batteries and cells etc.

People then, two centuries ago only, lacked the present day commonly used electric gadgets, tools, machines, lamps / bulbs, radios, TVs, microphones, cellphones, cooking ovens / stoves, heaters, air-conditioners, cars, buses, trains, aircraft etc.

People therefore had to burn wood, coal and oil so that they could stay warm, cook food, heat water for bathing etc. Moreover, mainly the hand held / operated fans were available to keep cool in the hot weather as the electric fans and air conditioners did not exist.

The darkness, in the night especially, inside (buildings, homes and schools etc.) and outside (roads and sidewalks etc.) required people to use wax candles and oil lamps / lanterns for light.

Moving here and there and going places two centuries ago was similarly slow and rather limited. The travels were mostly on foot or by using animals (horses etc.) directly, or the animals pulling carts and buggies to transport people and their belongings. The buses, cars and aircraft did not exist. Ships and boats to cross rivers, seas and oceans needed human power or wind power, thus good only for short distances while moving at slow speeds.

Moreover, as electricity powered microphones, telephones, cellphones and computers etc. did not exist two centuries ago, people generally were cut off totally from their friends and relatives unless they got together occasionally. They also could not get any news and entertainment etc. from radio and TV because these things did not exist.

The sermons / lectures from favorite preachers and motivational speakers (including swamis, gurus and babas) were not available to people at large to inspire them physically, mentally and emotionally because of lack of microphones, radios and TVs two centuries ago. Printing of magazines, books and newspapers etc. was similarly quite limited because electricity was not there in any form to run printers and printing presses, thus requiring people to write everything by hand or use a manually operated printing machine / press to do the job.

Due to the lack of electricity two centuries ago, factories could not be set up and run to manufacture important machines and equipment. Thus there were no sewing machines to stitch clothes quickly and properly, and as a result men and women often wore loose, hand made and poorly stitched clothes.

There was also the shortage / lack of good quality medicines and tonics because the factories and machines to make them did not exist, which led people to rely mostly on home made brews etc. to get better when they became sick. The unavailability of factory and machine produced tooth brushes, tooth pastes, shavers, hair trimmers, face creams and other items for hygiene and grooming (including soaps etc.) led people to not take proper care of themselves (bodily and orally etc.). In addition, men generally avoided cutting and trimming hair and beards.

The above is a very brief snapshot of life around the world just a couple of centuries ago, before the discovery of electricity and before it was put to the fullest use. Suffice to say, big kudos and thanks to everyone who made important contributions in the discovery, development and utilization of electricity.

Incidentally, the use of wind mentioned above to propel ships and boats 2 centuries ago and earlier was by using wind sails directly, and not by wind powered electric turbines which did not exist then.
