Using a new thermodynamic concept ('Diesel cycle', bearing his name), Rudolf Diesel eliminated the use of carburetor (for pre-mixing air and gasoline fuel) and spark plugs (for igniting the  air-fuel mix inside the engine) which are the integral parts of the ordinary gasoline / petrol engine.

His new invention 'diesel engine', bearing his name Diesel and using cheaper diesel fuel (also reflecting his name Diesel), was more efficient and it generated more power (horse power) than the gasoline (petrol) powered engine.  This made it possible to operate larger and heavier machinery privately and in industry  with the help of diesel engine which also ran on cheaper diesel fuel.

Similarly, the diesel engine led to the use of bigger ships and tankers in sea / ocean and pull longer and heavier trains on railway tracks due to the availability of more power while using cheaper diesel fuel.
