This weekend we finally finished unpacking all the books after the big move. We had not unpacked the books at our previous house. So it was a delight to see some of these books after more than two years. Threads about the command... err reminded me of two of those books. Shyam Selvadurai is a Sri Lankan of mixed Tamil and Sinhalese ethnicity who lives in Toronto. I read his books Funny Boy and Cinnamon Gardens a while ago. I don't recall anyone talking about him here. He is big on atmosphere, but also etches his characters out in fine detail. Funny Boy is set in the Sri Lanka of the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the conditions for the Civil War were created. It is the story of a gay Tamil boy growing up in a country that is coming apart at the seams. Cinnamon Gardens is set in colonial, pre-independence Ceylon and deals with an extended Jaffna Tamil family. I highly recommend both books.
