8. Small enclosure in a broken vision achieves noise reduction. ( 8 )
Hint 1: Word in anagram of another word
Hint 2: The pope is right about small enclosure... that's pen. Think about another word for vision, rearrange it, and put "pen" in it to get the answer.

DAMPENER (pen inside anagram of DREAM)
great set for a first attempt! thanks. i liked all the clues except 7,8 and 10.
hope you don't mind my comments.
7. Disheveled teacher in the classroom. (12)
this clue does not follow the rule that word play and definition should remain separated. in general, a cryptic clue should have the format <word play><defn> or <defn><word play>. mixing them up is not allowed. in the above clue, "disheveled", the anagram indicator is not tied with its fodder "the classroom" and the definition 'teacher' is in the middle of it.
8. Small enclosure in a broken vision achieves noise reduction. ( 8 )
normally, the actual word that is scrambled should be used in the clue(in this case, 'dream') and not its synonym. this rule is often flouted by some crossword setters.
10. Mr. Ganpat Ram, an aged chef, contrived to make pavakkai pitlai within. (7)
this one foxed me totally. what does pavakkai pitlai have anything to do with the answer? also, i could not find any word in the clue that means "managed". is it "contrived"? the format is not right, in that case.

Re: Thursday cryptics
DAMPENER is correct.
Thank you for the feedback... I appreciate it. I am all new to this, so this is how I will learn.
For 7, I originally had it set up as "Teacher in the classroom, disheveled." Would that have worked better?
For 8, I see your point.
For 10, I did intend "contrived to make something difficult" to mean "managed." Throwing in the pavakkai pitlai was a joke... my first thought was to say "contrived to prepare a difficult dish." Not sure if that would have been better.
Any feedback about the rest of the clues is also welcome. (Not just BW, but others too!)

yes - if "disheveled" was at the end, it would have followed the prescribed convention. the other clues were all very nice and tight - i liked "inferno" in particular.
for #10, "within" was used to indicate that the word is hidden i suppose. i was thrown off by pavakkai pitlai and was thinking of dravid gurls, iyer boys etc. :-)
anyway, these are some of the "ximenean principles" and several crossword setters do not follow them. i am a huge fan of "araucaria", a guardian crossword writer and he is a ximenean. of course, there is the libertarian camp who don't care for all these rules. you may choose your side.

Wouldn't "Teacher confused the classroom. (12)" be nice and tight (dead giveaway too)?

Re: Thursday cryptics
Yeah, that would have been tighter.
Thanks for posting those links, BW. I didn't know about this Ximenes character. I will read up and try to follow the rules on my next attempt.
