Re: lunch
kandi pappu (tuar dal) cooked with kale leaves and garnished traditional style, cauliflower sauteed with Senaga pappu (chana dal) and curry leaves, rice. The kale thing instead of spinach has become my new favorite way to have pappu.Impedimenta wrote:useless people, cannot even suggest a simple lunch menu. the one poster who at least tried, gets ragged. stud muffin central, this site has become.

Go to subway and have a six inch Roasted Chicken Breast (reply "the works" when asked for veggies) and choose Honey mustard + vinegar for dressing (no cheese).
Less than 6 gms. fat and 20 gms protein.

We make the kale pappu exactly like we make pappu with spinach. Same recipe, better results.Impedimenta wrote:WOW, kale with tur dal? really? i am trying to incorporate kale into the food i eat and not just a part of the green monster i make. this is news. thanks!

why? what do your doctors say in reference to vegetarian vs. eating meat? i often consider turning into a vegetarian (not counting seafood). apart from the fact that i find my food choices very limited, most docs i discuss it with discourage me. even the desi ones.
i love kale. i tried it with cooking wine and some garlic last week and it turned out awesome.

i wonder why they'd say that. mine have encouraged my steadfastly vegetarian diet with brief forays into seafood every now and then. i've been vegetarian most of my life with the exception of two early years in grad school when i was still teaching myself to cook. i'm surprised any person of indian origin would say that they feel limited and constrained by vegetarian food. if there is one cuisine in which it is easy to be vegetarian and have a lot of choice it's indian.
i've always been athletic and never feel run down or weak. i lift weights and run regularly; i'm no arnold schwazzanegger type, but i lift as much as any other meat eating man with my body type that i see in the gym.

The vegetables lose their most of their nutritional content with the Indian tendencies of overcooking everything. Plus on a vegetarian diet, one ends up eating excess carbs to feel satiated. Add that to a skinny Indian frame and you get the classic "Indian figure". I don't see how healthy lean cut meat and/or seafood cannot be part of a good nutritional diet.

Re: lunch
do you consider the indian cricketer anil kumble skinny? i understand the need to cut out excess carbs. one way to do this is to eat garbanzo or red beans along with huge portions of salad greens and things like walnuts. follow this up with small portions of brown or white rice and lots of lentil based stew (dal or sambar). follow this up with a high protein yogurt like fage. this has been my mode of existence for quite a few years.
i am not arguing for a vegetarian or vegan diet. i'm just refuting the position that such a meal cannot be a nutritionally complete one.

Anil Kumble is a statistical outlier for Indians. It would be like using Kobe Bryant as an example to show that Americans are not obese
Sure you can get protein in many forms but lean cut meat is an easy way to get my daily protein intake without having to consume copious quantities of lentils and nuts. Nuts are calorie dense and lentils have carbs too. I personally prefer foods with low glycemic index and that certainly rules out white rice.

i actually did not consult a doctor for this. my reasoning is more on lines of what JayZ is thinking. i need to tone up. that is my goal for this year. I need to build more stamina. for that i need to be able to run longer and most of all, i want to be able to perform effortlessly for say, a couple of hours. right now, when i perform for an hour and a half, taking short breaks in between items, i feel tired. this is going to be my life long term.
my problem is that i do not know how to go about it.
PS: how did you exactly cook the kale? just garlic and cooking wine?

Re: lunch
eating meat won't really take care of it. I eat meat eWerry day (atleast make it a point to eat white meat) and I get tired too at the end of the day.

not just first thing, but all the time, folks from the subcontinent talk about food, across the map in all languages, the first thing people ask is ' have you had food? ' or something equivalent to that.. its the main concern in their culture, the sad history of poverty, i suppose .. no other country people i know of greet others asking about their food schedule
